The Beatles are without doubt, one of the most influential bands of the 20th century, their work is legendary and their story well known, but where would the person new to them be advised to start?
Well the first port of call would be a little reading to put things into context. This band were no overnight sensation and it is in their roots that the key to their music and their path to success can be found:

I would recommend visiting the following websites:
This gives a potted history of the band but goes beyond he years 1962-1966

The introductory album I would suggest is

· The Beatles 1962-66

This album gives a good oversight to the early years of the Beatles and contains most of the major singles and a good selection of album track from the first period of their career.
The internet is covered with Beatles videos but, the following would give a good introduction the Early Beatles as a band:

Videos

The early days in the Cavern Club Liverpool

The Beatles were famous for the crowd reactions at their concerts and this gives some idea of that

Well established and using professionals to make a promo video

Further listening

· The Please Please Me Album ( This captures much of The Beatles early stage show in the studio)
· Rubber Soul .............shows how far they had come in four years.....one of their most beautiful albums.

Nice to be able to go back to trust and friendship!!!!!!!!!

It's a mixed up sensation this being alive
Oh! it wears a man down into the ground
It's the strangest elation
I can't describe it
Oh it leaves a man weary
It makes a man frown.

Thanks for this thread, very good idea! And I'm the perfect new recruit for the beatles because I never really liked them but I never gave them a proper, full album listen. So these two suggestion will be what I will begin with. I'll tell you if it grew on me or not. See you later.

After the full listen of the two albums, I'm sorry to say that my opinion of the Beatles stay the same. It's just not for me. But I will try other bands of this new beginner's guide thread as they add themselves and maybe do one about Mike Oldfield, as I know his entire career very well.
