Formed in D.C. in 1999, on a new label (Matador) for their 5th release. Ted is the only original member. Currently a trio with Ted (guitar/vocals), Marty Key (bass) and Chris Wilson (drums). I guess a punk/pop feel. Would compare to Spoon or New Pornographers. My favorite track is one where Ted lowers his range an octave or two. Assuming that is still him singing and I like the lower tone. This is the first time I have heard them and overall the album did not impress me.

California band formed in 1998. The name comes from a 1953 motorcycle gang film The Wild One featuring Marlon Brando. Currently a 3 man lineup of Peter Hayes, Robert Been and Leah Shapiro. Founding member Hayes is a former member of Brian Jonestown Massacre. Claiming influences ranging from Johnny Cash to the Sex Pistols, their 6 albums reflect that. A lot of Ramones in there for me. Several label changes have landed them at Vagrant Records. They slow it down in The Toll with some harmonica and nice backing vocals from Leah, which was the best for me.

Worst Track - Sweet Feeling

Best Track - The Toll

I'd never known her to cry
But this time is different for sure
She's shaking with tears in her eyes
As she picks up what's left of the night
The hope for a reason seemed pure
As we leave what's left on the wall

But oh how it's taken its toll
Oh how it's taken its toll
Everything's taken its toll
Everything's taken its toll

There was more then a break in the smiles
They rose and slowly they tired
As she turned the moments were made
There were none that could prove where she lay
There's a calm in the stories now told
And the distance will always be home

And oh how it's taken its toll
Oh how it's taken its toll
Everything's taken its toll
Everything's taken its toll

Everything's taken its toll
It's a moment we carry alone
With a cause there's a cure for the soul
But oh how it's taken its toll
Oh how it's taken its toll

^ I stopped at their third, and I believe they've changed a lot in the interim, but the early ones owe everything to The Jesus & Mary Chain.

I think I'm supposed to like this. I really did try. I did like the last one. There were only 3 tracks here I could handle. Of course some of this stuff does grow on you. But you would have to own it for it to grow on you, and I can't see buying this. A video out now for Stylo I think it is, and, sorry, it's just too stupid for me. Those characters are cute for about a minute. Never was much for cartoon characters. Well, except for Spongebob. Now he's cool. And patrick too. But wait, I'm rambling again. It's probaly as usual, when a group is on the rise, I tend to have too high of expectations, and am usually let down. I'll chalk it up to that, and wait for the next big thing.

Breaking Benjamin - Dear Agony

This is my favorite album of theirs, as always it is full of real emotion and life experiences. Depending on the song, it can be uplifting, relaxing and sometimes a little depressing if you don't like to have your mood totally changed in a second by a song.

Album 10/10

Pocahaunted - Make It Real from Make It Real [Not Not Fun, 2010]

"Make It Real collects seven of the band’s 2009 live staples for a 40-minute-ish collage of basement body music, garage dub damage, outsider funkadelic sprawl, voodoo rhythm workouts, duo femme soul vocal dynamics, dripping gold sweat, and dream fulfillment. Recorded barefoot and shirtless and direct to tape"

One of those rare purchases where I picked it up based on one song and having never heard of the guy. Turned out to be really good. Bostonian, William McAuley goes by Bleu (I don't know). The song Somebody Else was featured in the Spider Man film. The song I purchased it for is Watching You Sleep, which is a creepy stalker song similar to that Death Cab For Cutie in theme, and is my favorite. Get Up was a single, which I loved but it never made it. This is is his third album and he had another in 2009 which I have not heard. How about Fountains Of Wayne for a sound alike.

Side project of two members of The National, Bryce Dessner and Padma Newsome. The collaboration actually predates The National, this being the 5th release. Originally performing music more towards classical, this is a little broader, even though some tracks are still classical. They are accompanied by two other band members, with former opera singer Shara Worden picking up a lot of the vocal chores. Really hard to classify this, as influences are numerous. Too numerous for my tiny brain to absorb. Not for me though. For that avante garde crowd I guess.

I'm currently spinning AVANTASIA - The Scarecrow.

I love hearing Kahn, Jorn and Tobi all in the same song! Best song from Alice Cooper for a good long time too.

Great album; I'm gearing up for the new AVANTASIA being released (in the U.S.) next month.
