Hi all

I havent posted in a while, been very busy with new baby and new house. its driving me insane :o_O:

anyway thought i would try this on for size:

what, do you think, influences our tastes in music? bass? vocals? skill of the instrument player? a feeling it gives you?

For me, it a mix of the vocals, and bass, i love the bass of a song wether it is awsome guitar rift, a most excellent synthe or drum that sound like they were played by the devil himself! vocals as well make me want to listen to certain songs, lyric dont have to make much sence, i dont even need to undersatnd what is meant by them, but odd, strange and ofcourse passionate vocals can make or break a song for me: eg:

Suger - System of a down
No good - The Prodigy
Control - Puddle of mud
If you still hate me - Ill Nino

All excellent songs in my humble opinion, fairly differant but still the same

would love to hear your thoughts/feelings/opinions etc

It depends on my mood, really... Some bands I like merely for the music. Others for the vocallists. The Mars Volta is a beautiful melding of both. I've started to have an intense interest in jazz/avant guitar playing.

Hi Syn. Good thread !!

My tastes are pretty wide & varied, and I tend to be drawn toward the best of most genres of music.

What captures my interest is one of two things, which may or may not be linked:

- Firstly, I love anything which is well written. By that I mean captivating melodies, or arresting rhythms, or strong lyrics. If any one of these is present, then an artist will have my attention. If more than one is present, I'm probably going to like a song or album. All three, & I'm in heaven.

- Music that's original or different can get through the net as well. A spark of originality & swagger can get an artist a long way IMHO.

This may all sound a bit vague & nebulous, but I know what I mean, and it works for me !!

Mostly it has to do with feeling for me. Generally I'm a lyrics oriented person. I tend to find I relate more to wonderful lyrics. This is for my rock and alternative interests. For jazz and classical it's the dynamics of the music.
If you can't be a wonderful example, be a horrifying reminder.

Depends on my mood - but usually at least one of the following -

- any vocal performance that sounds heartfelt
- Clever,interesting and/or witty lyrics
- music that's loud and fast -preferably both
- melodic layered guitars
- It sounds really strange and intriguing
