Yes Gater, I knew you were collecting Grateful Dead albums and you have quite a collection ....wrt Iron Maiden ....Live after Death to me is it...brilliant album...how does the Maiden Japan live stack up against it in your opinion, Gater ?
gater Wrote:I think I may have mentioned this to you before SteveO, but at my house we have reached the stage of collecting entire catalogs from bands/musicians. Currently trying to add the odds and ends lacking in the collection from Iron Maiden, like their "Women In Uniform" EP. Just added "Maiden Japan" a little while back.

While we try and get the actual CD copy of a given album, we have plenty of digital albums on our 1.5T hard drives, covering over 800 artists, and over 3,000 albums.

Tig, do you get the albums that you listen to from a favorite on line music site ? and if you like it ...buy it ? seems to be the way to go with so much music out there..hard to know where to start at times !
Tiggi Wrote:Albums only, here, even on my i-Pod.

We have a Listen List that we both put albums on that we fancy hearing, then take turns to pick from the list. I tend to contribute a good helping of albums that I either don't know very well, or that I haven't liked before in hope of finding that tastes have changed enough to like them more.

I can relate to the absent music storage dilemna, J !!!...my own mixes I compile of my favorite tracks is listened to from time to time like the recent Beatle covers I did thanks to the MDers !!!..otherwise I try to find a piece of music I enjoy from start to finish ! I am finding that jazz and classical fit the bill for the most part....never mediocre from start to finish !

How's your project progressing ?
Jerome Wrote:A mess - it's all over the house, boxes, cupboards, purpose-built shelving, coverted bookcases. And then there's the ones I can't even find.....must actually do a count of all the stuff one day. Probably have a nervous breakdown when I realise how much I've spent to date. Poverty looms large. But to answer your question, I don't compile playlists out of extracts or bits and pieces. I like whole albums because they are sometimes created with a logical sequence that is to be followed. There are valleys and peaks to be negotiated. To me that's the whole purpose of music. Too many upbeat tracks in a row leave me bored.

^^ The stuff in the previous post (Listen List etc) is just what we have on vinyl/CD.

I do use streaming site Spotify to audition albums, then place them on the Buy List if they meet my exacting standards, but I buy a fair amount of music without getting to listen first.

get him Opeth..the Heritage album and grab Leonard Cohen's new one next month fast !!!..lol !!!!!

I am in the slow process of putting all of my collection to date...on my ipod...very slow process...only have 300 albums done out of around 3,000 ! I like the idea of having everything on one storage unit with backups of course !!! If I lose any music in ipod transfers I just forget about it ...and if I think of it I can go get the cd, dvd, vinyl and put it back on !
gottaluvmusic Wrote:I wouldnt know...mines all on my ipod. I used to have heaps of discs...but that was when the kids were younger...and they thought they'd make good frisbees Undecided have given up trying to buy more discs to play normally. Everytime CH and I are together and I pick up a disc...its "Ive already got that one"...grrr.....ONE DAY I shall find one he doesnt have!

Very sorry to hear about your stolen ipod, Trace ! Any chance that Santa will get you a new one ?
TraceNspace Wrote:I've got some vinyl, some cassettes many CD's and lots of MPS's. The vinyl is on the shelf the cassettes are scattered in boxes and the CD cases have been moved to boxes while the actual disc are in a flip through organizers. I burn any albums I down load and put them in my organizers but mostly I listen to my iPhone as my iPod was stolen last week Sad

Never heard of Bombay Bicycle Club and I will have to check them out sometime ...lol...man I have a lot of music to check out....trying to get through Grateful Dead at the moment !!!!!..lol
centermez Wrote:I have a small and growing collection of vinyl, but most everything I have is digital. But it's always organized in albums... I think that in our world of innumerable singles the notion of a good 'album' is lost. All the songs in a good album should support each other, so I like to listen to albums at a time. Unfortunately there are few bands that are really good with that xD. I think Bombay Bicycle Club is the best for having albums where all the songs agree to the mood.

I listen to the mp3 various tracks when I go outside also usually shopping with the wife ...lol
Music Head Wrote:Strictly albums for me also
Vinyl, cd's
Tried the mp3 thing for awhile
Doesn't work for me
Has sat idle for over a year now
Need that album cover and liner notes to look at
Vinyl is better, but cd works, as long as I can read it.
Would probably use the mp3 if I ever went anywhere
Leave the homefront maybe twice a month.
Unless Horse flys in to unite for another HorseHead world tour
