What Are You Listening To?

KISS   "destroyer" cd/vinyl  1976

a revisit
their fourth of twenty, yup, i got them all...
that was actually refreshing to hear after a few years
thoroughly enjoyed it,
a great rock album that works for what it is, bombastic egotistical rock and roll
I LOVE THIS ALBUM

i should really pick "beth" but this one with the blood spitting stage theatrics intro tops it for me:

oh bugger it,

lets have "beth" too complete with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra wearing KISS make-up live

"BTO....Bachman,Turner,Overweight
They were big in the 70s....for five minutes,on a Saturday,after lunch..."  -  Me 2014.

PRETENDERS  "original album series"  cd

a revisit
after listening to "last of the independents" i thought why not revisit the others in this box set
US/UK rock band fronted by the charismatic, sultry, sexy Chrissie Hynde...
not going to talk about them all again so i will just mark it like MH does with his vinyl collection thread:

Pretenders               1980  -   B
Pretenders-2            1982  -   A
Learning To Crawl     1984  -   A
Get Close                 1986  -   A

and from a few days ago:
Last Of The Independents 1994  -  B
"BTO....Bachman,Turner,Overweight
They were big in the 70s....for five minutes,on a Saturday,after lunch..."  -  Me 2014.

NEIL YOUNG  "after the goldrush"  cd,  1970

a revisit (once again LOL)
probably my most played Neil Young album over the years...
and theres a reason for that....its a masterpiece.
not my favourite but certainly his best, no question about it iMO
played it in the car this morning as we were taking Poppy (brussels griffon: Griffon Bruxellois - Wikipedia) dog to the park
Lynne really does not like Neil Young's whiney vocals and thinks he sings out of tune, oh well...
favourite has always been a toss up between the title track and "birds", the latter wins out this time
I LOVE THIS ALBUM

fav:

"BTO....Bachman,Turner,Overweight
They were big in the 70s....for five minutes,on a Saturday,after lunch..."  -  Me 2014.

SHAKIN' STEVENS  "this ole house"  cd/vinyl  1981

a revisit
from Wales
his nineth studio album of twenty, his breakthru album
started life as an Elvis impersonator in the early 1970s and starred in several stage shows about "the king" before he died
his music is rooted firmly in the 1950s rockabilly/rock style
Shaky had more top-10 hits in the UK during the 1980s than any other artist
a very good album but not his best, rates around 2.2
I LIKE THIS ALBUM

fav is his excellent cover of the Rosemary Clooney classic:

"BTO....Bachman,Turner,Overweight
They were big in the 70s....for five minutes,on a Saturday,after lunch..."  -  Me 2014.

ROLLING STONES  "let it bleed"  cd  1969

a revisit
their eighth studio album
i dont understand the 'love' for this band and their albums
great singles band, lousy albums (mostly)
only one track i like on this, the rest....pish
I DO NOT LIKE THIS ALBUM

"BTO....Bachman,Turner,Overweight
They were big in the 70s....for five minutes,on a Saturday,after lunch..."  -  Me 2014.

LOU REED  "new york"  cd/vinyl  1989

a revisit
in fact a deliberate revisit
only album of his to score platinum status here in Australia
and only album of his i really enjoy
love the way he paints his landscapes lyrically offset against the simple yet edgy music
a concept album of sorts as he tells stories of everyday life on New York
I LOVE THIS ALBUM

Pedro lives out of the Wilshire Hotel
He looks out a window without glass
And the walls are made of cardboard, newspapers on his feet
And his father beats him 'cause he's too tired to beg

He's got 9 brothers and sisters
They're brought up on their knees
It's hard to run when a coat hanger beats you on the thighs
Pedro dreams of being older and killing the old man
But that's a slim chance
He's going to the boulevard

He's gonna end up on the dirty boulevard
He's going out to the dirty boulevard
He's going down to the dirty boulevard

This room cost $2, 000 a month
You can believe it, man, it's true
Somewhere there's a landlord's laughing till he wets his pants
No one dreams of being a doctor or a lawyer or anything
They dream of dealing on the dirty boulevard

Give me your hungry, your tired, your poor I'll piss on 'em
That's what the Statue of Bigotry says
Your poor huddled masses
Let's club 'em to death
And get it over with and just dump 'em on the boulevard

Get 'em out on the dirty boulevard
Goin' out to the dirty boulevard
They're going down on the dirty boulevard
Goin' out

Outside it's a bright night
There's an opera at Lincoln Center
Movie stars arrive by limousine
The klieg lights shoot up over the skyline of Manhattan
But the lights are out on the mean streets

A small kid stands by the Lincoln Tunnel
He's selling plastic roses for a buck
The traffic's backed up to 39th Street
The TV whores are calling the cops out for a suck

And back at the Wilshire, Pedro sits there dreaming
He's found a book on Magic in a garbage can
He looks at the pictures
And stares up at the cracked ceiling
At the count of 3,he says
I hope I can disappear

And fly, fly away from this dirty boulevard
I want to fly from the dirty boulevard
I want to fly from the dirty boulevard
I want to fly-fly-fly-fly from the dirty boulevard

QUEEN   "the game"  cd/vinyl  1980

a revisit
their eighth studio album, first to uses synthesisers
their last great album IMO and one of only four a actually love,
the other three being "sheer heart attack", "news of the world" and "jazz"
i love eight of the ten tracks on here, and disliking two
those two are "crazy little thing called love" and "dont try suicide"
the album would rank 2.6 for me which means
I LOVE THIS ALBUM

one that gets little attention:

"BTO....Bachman,Turner,Overweight
They were big in the 70s....for five minutes,on a Saturday,after lunch..."  -  Me 2014.

BILLY JOEL  "glass houses"  cd/vinyl  1980

a revisit
his seventh of thirteen
between us, Lynne and myself own the first twelve, neither of us bothered with his classical album but should we have??
iconic cover
iconic opening to the album also with the sound of breaking glass right before it kicks in to "you may be right"
so ten tracks, five on each side and every track on the first side were issued as singles which was pretty incredible back than.
"you may be right", "its still rock and roll to me", "sometimes a fantasy", "dont ask me why" and "all for leyna" and the second side is just as good IMO...

really enjoyed this one on this occasion, cant remember it sounding this good but maybe i was mistaken
album ranks  around 2.4 which means
I LOVE THIS ALBUM

hard to pick just one off this album

"BTO....Bachman,Turner,Overweight
They were big in the 70s....for five minutes,on a Saturday,after lunch..."  -  Me 2014.
