Spotify listen
well that was surprisingly good
some classic rock sounds, a couple of country tinged tunes and several piano ballads
quite easily Elton's best in 20 years IMO
not so familiar with Brandi's albums but if it takes her to lift his game then she is a winner for me
its a keeper!
the single: Elton John, Brandi Carlile - Who Believes In Angels?
the excellent album closer: When This Old World Is Done With Me
my favourite:

I listened to the album. The trouble with the likes of Elton John is that nothing he does now matches up to the great stuff he's produced in the past. If I wasn't comparing, it might be different, but I am, so it was pretty underwhelming, for me. Sorry to say!

i hear where you are coming from Ruby,
his catalogue is so extensive and that first half really is 'classic' that it can be a problem disassociating new from old at times.
i managed to do it with "the diving board", "songs from the west coast" and the one he did with Leon Russell and they worked out just fine for me.
anyway, i have just made it my first new release purchase of 2025 on vinyl so im hoping Brandi keeps it relevant.
are you familiar with Brandi Carlile's catalogue?
if you are can you recommend a place to start?

^I really like The Union too - a real gem. So I guess there are always exceptions! It's all subjective, as SteveO used to say - a lot!
Maybe MH can help out with Brandi Carlile - I am no help there. Sorry.

I have to agree with Ruby here. I have the same dilemma. Cannot really compare the new stuff with his classic period. GYBR and BM are my favourites. His collaboration with Leon Russel was his best thing for years. I don't know anything by Brandi.

well it is impossible to not compare albums by any 'classic' artist to the more recent music they produce.
you either compare it and dismiss it because it is never going to be as good or...
you accept it because of who the artist is, but would you accept the mediocrity if it was by anyone but your favorite classis artist???
i guess i have fallen into both catagories at times,
i am so forgiving of McCartney, Weller, Dylan and a few others yet, i am now not forgiving of Neil Young. so go figure that one out???
