What Are You Listening To?

RONAN KEATING  "destination" 2002

borrowed from a friend...
Ronan's second of twelve...
i used to have the debut which was pretty good....
i knew at least half a dozen of these songs, all of which i either loved or liked...
rest of the album was very good also and it would rank 2.2-2.3 overall
I LIKE THIS ALBUM

a great little ballad.

"BTO....Bachman,Turner,Overweight
They were big in the 70s....for five minutes,on a Saturday,after lunch..."  -  Me 2014.

CAROLE KING  "welcome home"  vinyl,  1978.

her nineth studio album...
i put it under 'easy listening/soft rock' because i think 'pop' belittles her music...
a consistently good artist who has never let me down...
not the best album of hers i own in my collection but still pretty good...
album ranks a decent 2.2 which means...
I LIKE THIS ALBUM

GEORGE MICHAEL  "songs from the last century" 1999

borrowed from a good friend...
his fourth solo album and only one i do not own...
a covers set...
to be honest im not overly impressed with his song selection on this one but his vocals are as good as ever...
vocals = 10/10, song choice = 1/10...
so if i go on those stats then this comes in at 1.6 which means
I DO NOT LIKE THIS ALBUM

STING   "the dream of the blue turtles"  cd/vinyl  1985

his first post-Police album...
lots of jazz, blues, reggae, pop, folk on this one and every song flows seamlessly into eachother...
an absolute masterpiece of an album IMO and one that everybody should own...
I LOVE THIS ALBUM

as i love every track on here i couldnt pick a favourite so i just picked a random live version of one of the songs:

"BTO....Bachman,Turner,Overweight
They were big in the 70s....for five minutes,on a Saturday,after lunch..."  -  Me 2014.

PAUL McCARTNEY   "tug of war" cd/cassette  1982

his eleventh post Beatle release...
first post Lennon death and also first produced by George Martin after he left Beatles...
definitely soft rock and easy listening here but i hint or two of pop also....
as far as 'complete' albums go Macca usually fails to deliver at times but occasionally he comes up with something as good as any Beatles album (band on the run, flaming pie, venus and mars) and this one...
two of his greatest ever songs are on this one including the title track and the superb piano ballad "wanderlust"...
only blemish on here is the cringeworthy "ebony and ivory" which i detest with a passion, everything else is first class IMO...
I LOVE THIS ALBUM

if youve never heard this track it might be worth taking 4 minutes out of your life to give it a whirl:

"BTO....Bachman,Turner,Overweight
They were big in the 70s....for five minutes,on a Saturday,after lunch..."  -  Me 2014.

BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN   "tunnel of love" cd/cassette  1987

his eighth studio album...
one that i always thought was lukewarm at best, but then again "born in the usa" was always going to be hard to follow...
i guess the biggest problem i had with it was that horrible drum machine and the synths which really dont suit his sound...
always though of this as his 'ditch' album to get away from mainstream success like Uncle Neil and his 'ditch trilogy'...
funny how time changes perspective though, still not classic Springsteen but a decent enough album IMO even though it is in the ditch...
I LIKE THIS ALBUM

the brilliant lead off single:

"BTO....Bachman,Turner,Overweight
They were big in the 70s....for five minutes,on a Saturday,after lunch..."  -  Me 2014.

Listening to a jazz radio program while busy fiddling around some electronic gear. Louis Armstrong & Ella. Lovely stuff. Must buy a couple of discs of their work. Laid back jazz is perfect early morning material. Sophisticated, subtle riffs flowing around the house. Makes life worth living.

LEO SAYER  "voice in my head"  cd,  2005

his twelfth of sixteen...
i own fifteen with the other one on order as i type...
as expected, a solid album from Mr Sayer...
good soft rock on here...
all written by him or co-writes with Albert Hammond...
nothing not to like and everything up to standard IMO...
I LIKE THIS ALBUM.

the gorgeous lead single:

"BTO....Bachman,Turner,Overweight
They were big in the 70s....for five minutes,on a Saturday,after lunch..."  -  Me 2014.

ELVIS COSTELLO  "north" cd, 2003

his twenty-third album...
surprised to find i had not previously posted it on MD...
a jazz album...
lots of mournful laments/torch songs...
written during his marriage breakdown and new romance with Ms Krall...
two or three i do not like because there is simply no melody for me...
the rest are passable but nothing great except for the bonus track which i love...
songs are sparse musically, usually just piano and brushes, but some orchestrations on other tracks...
bonus tune is the only song that is musically upbeat...
album rates a modest 1.7 for me which means
I LIKE THIS ALBUM

ANNE SOFIE von OTTER meets ELVIS COSTELLO  "for the stars" cd, 2001

another Costello album i have never posted on MD...
his twenty-first studio album, her fourth...
Anne is a classically trained Mezzo-Soprano and it shows in the tones and control she has over her voice...
whilst the album has its charms i feel duped by calling it a Costello album...
i expected a duets album between the pair, however Costello only sings on six of the eighteen tracks...
he plays baritone guitar, bass and organ elsewhere and worked as co-producer and engineer on the tracks...
each play their part wonderfully but i would have preferred if Costello was credited as a "guest"...
this album would score a 1.7 if i were to mark is which means,
I LIKE THIS ALBUM

the title track is simply gorgeous:  Elvis Costello and Anne Sofie Von Otter: For The Stars - YouTube

but my fave is this medley: "broken bicycles" was written by Tom Waits, "junk" by Paul McCartney

"BTO....Bachman,Turner,Overweight
They were big in the 70s....for five minutes,on a Saturday,after lunch..."  -  Me 2014.
