two of the best horror movies ever made IMO
no 'slice and dice' or 'rivers of blood and gore' like the modern horror genre but the effect is caused by good old fashioned suspense.
some great actors in these movies:
Gregory Peck
Lee Remick
Patrick Troughton
William Holden
Lance Henricksen and Lee Grant to name a few.
both movies score 4.5/5 from me, the latter sequels werent worth the time it took to watch them....

on Amazon Prime:
2021 sci-fi thriller...
plot: In the not-too-distant future, Thomas Malone, an ex-cop, is a prisoner serving a life sentence for a crime he didn't commit. He's offered a chance at freedom if he wins a secret game on a private island as "prey" to five ultra-rich "hunters." One by one, the hunters turn on each other due to egos & grudges. The final hunter alive, Samuel, the "Apex Warrior," gets outwitted in the end. Malone wins his freedom so he can see his family again.

a predictable run of the mill movie, no real surprises at all, background fodder, nothing more or nothing less

THE MANOR
on Amazon Prime:
a thriller-cum-old fashioned horror. (no gore or violence, just relies on suspense)
plot:
After suffering a stroke at her 70th birthday party, Judith Albright, a professional dancer in her youth who is now a dance instructor, is moved into a nursing home after being diagnosed with Parkinson's. Her 17-year-old grandson, Josh, whom she is very close to, opposes the move, while his mother, Judith’s daughter, Barbara, tries to comfort him. Judith assures Josh that the move is best for everyone. But soon she notices strange behaviors and the deaths of other residents. She imagines a tree like figure looming in her room. Eventually it is revealed that three of the other elderly people living there are much older even and have been using witchcraft to suck the life forces out of victims (patients of the Manor). This allows them to become young every nightfall, returning to their old forms when the sun rises.

Phew!
finally finished this almost nine hour, three part doco.
premise:
so Paul McCartney thought that to create a new concept the Beatles should film the making of their next album ("let it be") and follow up with a one off concert spectacular to promote the album.
the band set up in the studios and over the space of three weeks they filmed over 150 hours of footage of them writing, creating and rehearsing songs along with the infamous "savile Row rooftop live performance".
episode one: shows the band coming together with no ideas or concept of what to do, jamming and eventually getting the basic structure of songs, it also shows the struggles within the band to get motivated in the studio, also shows George Harrison walking out of the band at the end of the episode.
episode two: shows George returning with guarantees that Paul wont be so bossy and all members will work together as a unit and finally getting songs together.
episode three: shows the band finally getting it together and finally realising the visions of Paul McCartney in the idea of the doco, concert and album. episode shows the entire "rooftop concert" and it finally being shut down by the Police for 'breach of the peace', all publicity is good publicity, right?!.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
anyway,
what i took away form the whole thing was:
1: there was no animosity between Yoko and Paul, George and Ringo.
2: there was little friction between the band and they even discussed doing solo projects.
3: they worked harmoniously together for the most part and all helped create each others song.
4: the way history/media has portrayed the final part of their career was probably mostly fiction due to the fact that it was the media that didnt like Yoko Ono, not the band.
5: "get back" was generally regarded as being written about Yoko and Paul's hatred of her, this doco shows that it was written about the anti-immigration sentiment in the UK at the time.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
an excellent doco for those interested in how the writing and recording processes work.

BULLET TRAIN
at the cinema...
stars Brad Pitt...
a black comedy about an assassin who is on board a Japanese bullet train with several other trained assassins.
none of them know that there are other assassins on board and this is where the chaos begins...
it is not until the very end that the connection between them all is explained which connects the dots to a seemingly random connection of random possibilities...
think "pulp fiction" as a similar type of movie but without the reverse storyline.

I am not a big fan of football by any means but I do watch the occasional game now and then. Manchester United are at an all time low. And rightly so. The team is useless. After their last defeat they will probably fire the manager when they should be kicking the players out. They make zero effort to play as a team. A bunch of overpaid prima donnas who cannot justify their exorbitant salaries. They are more interested in their hairdo's, tattoos and sports cars than they are in playing as professional sportsmen. The team is a shambles.

"ALAN JACKSON - small town southern man"
documentary on amazon Prime.
doco made in 2018 details the poverty of his humble beginnings living in a tool shed with parents and three other siblings through to the endless string of menial blue-collar jobs and his dream of becoming a singer. doco eventually gets in to his struggles getting recognised in Nashville and how he was going to return to Georgia after one too many rejections from Label Exec's through to becoming one of the greatest country music singers of all time with countless awards and the highest praises of the "country elite" and performing for four Presidents.
doco has interviews with Jackson, his family, friends, luminaries and peers.
an excellent documentary about a man i knew nothing about yet own 13 of his 18 studio albums.
this will give me whole new perspective on the man and his music the next time i play his music.
