TIMOTHY B SCHMIT ~ Day by Day

There is a God after all! At last – a new album that’s earworthy. Timothy B Schmit is hitting his stride - somewhat late in his career, but hey, mid-seventy seems to be the new 50 - well done him. Absolutely lovely opener – “Simple Man” – it’s hard to get past it! Lindsay Buckingham lends lead on this track. There are several other guest contributors on the album; Jackson Browne, John Fogerty, Benmont Tench, Jim Keltner, John McFee, and Kenny Wayne Shepherd.

TBS has a liking for reggae and ska which comes across in no uncertain terms on a few tracks, there’s also some real R&B sounding stuff now and then and even a hint of gospel so it’s a bit of a mixed bag.

I am not crazy about about some of the songs, “Mr X” for example, and on an album of one hour and eight minutes, that’s 5 that could’ve been painlessly excised, in my view, which of course, is entirely subjective! Someone else will love it, no doubt! Interestingly, there are 5 songs over 6 minutes long, 4 over 5 minutes and a mere 3 at the requisite attention holding 4 minutes or shorter.

Sounds as though he had a lot of fun making this album. It’s quite laidback and light – I’m pretty sure he’s 100% comfortable with who he is as a person, and completely at home in his skin. I also like that he’s not in any way attempting to deliver anything other than the style of music he admires and/or is used to playing. Good ol’ rock n roll, soul, blues/rock – fab harmonies – accomplished musicians from various walks – solid.

My favourites are definitely the California folk/rock style numbers and while I’m not enamoured of all the tracks (mainly due to being fussy), there’s enough to keep me listening and wanting to hear a fair few of them again. Btdubs – B is for Bruce, in case anyone was curious!

Favourites …

“Feather in the Wind” – beautiful song … https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QKvxdWXFwjM

“Tastes Like Candy” - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=babX_2TMJYs

Nothing quite surpasses the simply superb opener, IMHO …
