Chas Cronk is the longtime bassist for Strawbs. In addition to his new material, he’s rehashed two songs here – one from the Strawbs catalogue “Everybody Knows” from The Broken Hearted Bride and one from his only other album outside of Strawbs which was Touch the Earth with Dave Lambert (also Strawbs alumni and a fab guitarist) – “A Splash of Blue”.
This is a very gentle wafty album and one might be inclined to call it underwhelming, as I have been; I must confess, however, taking a step back, there’s something quite compelling in these simple dreamy pieces. Might depend on one’s mood I suppose - it often does with me! I’d give it the time of day but wouldn’t rave about it and that said – would not be unhappy to get better acquainted with it either, so may pick it up at some point. Some nice elements just no obvious wow factor, but that’s not always the best arbiter anyway, plus he had the good sense to include a couple of instrumentals – always helpful to have some breathing room IMHO. Pity about the mostly tinned drums and I’m not entirely convinced by the production, but oh well ...
I like this one, with Dave Bainbridge of Iona and lately of Strawbs, among others - stunning guitar ... brilliant without being flashy ...
