DAVID KNOPFLER ~ Shooting for the Moon

When will I ever learn?? Eating humble pie – yet again. Lol! After very rude words about David Knopfler’s voice it turns out that was a blanket judgement, and the album isn’t all terrible. Sorry DK. While I stand by my opinion that he is not a great vocalist, he acquits himself adequately on several tracks on this new release. I wouldn’t go to the extent of saying admirably, but I could sit through the whole thing with only intermittent cringes. I don't really understand how he can not know he's off key here and there, but oh well ... when he lets go of the gruffness and gets into gentler, more lilting mode, he can certainly rise to the occasion and the music itself is wonderful.

Can’t find any info about who does what on the album but there are some truly lovely strings, and sax – pretty sure the keys are all him and a lot of the guitarwork. As with some artists of certain advancing generations, he’s facing the ever-increasing truth and inevitability of his own mortality which seems to be pre-occupying him to a degree, mind you, that's a general malaise at this time! He’s an accomplished storyteller just like someone else we know, and similarly steeped in tales of yore.

He’s not mainstream at all in terms of publishing his work and seems to depend on funding endeavours to get out there so some sleuthing is required to gather intel about his releases, which this time, came to naught, I'm sorry to say! The music is fabulous, he’s a more than able lyricist and his song-writing is credible; with a good vocalist, his material would be elevated to a different level altogether. Hope he gets the memo. Big Grin

nice tracks Ruby, thanks.

although not the same, the cover reminds me of Uncle Neil's "homegrown" cover art.
