What Are You Listening To?
Gordon Giltrap - Perilous Journey

Hadn't noticed before but the motif in "Heartsong" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GWTU4vXTV0I made me think of The Zombies' "A Moment in Time" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aevHjdxNuLE - not expecting any litigation to ensue, lol.

A very young Simon Phillips (20) on drums ... aside from him, quite the orchestra backing up the whole affair. Giltrap's (unofficial) trilogy Visionary, Perilous Journey & Fear of the Dark is a go to for me - lovely stuff IMHO.

Was working on something at 3 this morning and this came on the radio - very catchy. Now I can't get it out of my head - just love that chord change on 'a new England'.

great version Jerome.
love the original version by Billy Bragg also  Billy Bragg - A New England - YouTube
just love the stripped back guitar/vocal of it.
i love a lot of Billy's works, but his lack of singing skills (like Dylan) are sometimes better left to 'real' vocalists IMO.

Kirsty died aged 40 around 20years ago,
she was diving in Cuba and a speed boat entered the 'no power boat' area just as she was surfacing.
she died in front of her then 13yo son...
absolutely tragic senseless accident.
to be perfectly honest i cannot for the life of me recall what happened to the Speedboat driver, i should google it (but cant be bothered)

love the lyrics of the original song, so simple yet effective.
they obviously changed a few lines here and there and added a verse or two for Kirsty's version.

love the verse about the Satellites  (puts a new spin on the whole shooting star cliche)

I was twenty one years when I wrote this song
I'm twenty two now, but I won't be for long
People ask when will you grow up to be a man
But all the girls I loved at school
Are already pushing prams.

I loved you then as I love you still
Tho I put you on a pedestal,
They put you on the pill
I don't feel bad about letting you go
I just feel sad about letting you know.

I don't want to change the world
I'm not looking for a new England
I'm just looking for another girl.

I loved the words you wrote to me
But that was bloody yesterday
I can't survive on what you send
Every time you need a friend.

I saw two shooting stars last night
I wished on them but they were only satellites
Is it wrong to wish on space hardware
I wish, I wish, I wish you'd care.

I don't want to change the world
I'm not looking for a new England
I'm just looking for another girl

I like the toned-down version as well. It's such an infectious piece of music. Must have played it over 20 times since 3 this morning. Full blast on headphones. Makes me want to break open a bottle of champagne or something. A great groove to this track. Highly addictive.

BEACH BOYS  "pet sounds"  cd, 1966.

a revisit....
history lesson: written after being inspired by "rubber soul" and then the Beatles elevated the recording process after being inspired by this one to record Revolver, the Beach Boys responded with the classic single "good vibrations", the Beatles raised the songwriting and music for Sgt Peppers and then Brian Wilson had his 'episode/breakdown', game over!...
anyway, back to the album...
often regarded as one of the greatest albums of the rock era but i dont see why, IMO, the majority of the tracks are mediocre at best vocally, melodies and musically, the only saving grace for me are the harmonies which they excel at...
only standout track for me on this average album is linked below...
I DO NOT LIKE THIS ALBUM

David Minasian - Random Acts of Beauty and The Sound of Dreams. 'Listening to' is not quite right - that would be 'wallowing in' - the whole day. The latter of the two albums anyway - so gorgeous - ticks all the boxes for any fan of symphonic prog/rock - love it.

From Random Acts of Beauty - "Masquerade" - vocals and guitar by Mr Latimer who must have influenced Justin Minasian very heavily - David's son, who otherwise plays lead on both albums ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ES18eCWYcXk

I can tell that this will be stuck in my head for a while now, which I won't mind a bit! Annie Haslam singing ...

What is probably the most straightforward song on the album - vocals by P J Olsson who hails from the Alan Parson Live Project, among other acts ...
