The actual reason I came to this thread - an undersea cable has broken, again, and now, of all times, we have disrupted internet connectivity. Great.
"Internet service provider Afrihost has notified customers that there are major outages across all South African Internet Service Providers (ISPs), as a result of a break in the WACS undersea cable between Portugal and England
The cause of the cable break along the cable is unclear. it marks the second major breakage event along the West African Internet sea cables this year, and comes at the worst possible time: as South Africans grow heavily dependent on their Internet connections during the COVID-19 lockdown.
As a result of the break, the use of international websites and services, which include VPNs (virtual private networks), may result in latency – decreased speeds and response times."

^^
generally theryre a mile or more under the sea so what could possibly cause them to break?
only thing I can come up with is the long line trawlers getting their nets/lines snagged
maybe someone else has a better answer?

There's no break in any cable. Because of the C19 pandemic and the lockdown associated with it, internet traffic has increased significantly. As a result they have to cut some of the traffic loose. Load shedding comes to the IT world!

AHA!
I knew someone would have the answer,
makes perfect sense Jerome, thanks
I know what undersea cable Ruby was probably commenting on as I saw a documentary some time ago about the laying of a cable from the UK, through Ascension and down to Capetown,
they doco was about the offshoot cable they were about to install to St.Helena (Sth Atlantic obviously).
now, to digress on another tangent.
ive always wanted to visit St Helena,
problem now though is that they have an airport and its open to more travellers, thus the isolation, quaintness and pristine nature of the isle will soon become commercialised
with all the trappings and problems that arise through tourism.
for those who don't know, St Helena is where Napoleon was sent by the British to live out his days, he is also buried there.

I don't know whether I am right or not but that would be my best guess.
