What Are You Listening To?

TIN MACHINE  "tin machine II" cd, 1991

second album under that moniker for David Bowie.
first had a garage rock/grungy sound to it
this one is more Nine Inch Nails influenced (according to the man himself and his guitarist at the time)
fans didn't like it back in the day, this wasn't the Bowie they wanted to hear.
they still wanted "lets dance" and "dancing in the street" Bowie.
in hindsight the album is Bowie through and through.
I can hear the classic 70s guitar driven sound, through to his late '90s sounds coming through.
this is a classy album, one of his best IMO
well worth a listen if you get the chance.
I LOVE THIS ALBUM.

SONIC YOUTH  "dirty"  cd, 1992

their seventh of fifteen, I own three.
hearing some Jack White, some Courtney Love in places.
commercial, almost radio friendly by their standards.
good solid album, my favourite of the three.

DAVID GRAY  "white ladder"  cd,  1998

his fourth.
only studio album I own, I should own more.
album just continues to grow on me.
not sure if "masterpiece" is the right word for it
and if not, then its not far off it.
superb work of art.

has the hallmarks of all you either love or hate about him so lovers gonna love etc...
two covers, Cohen's "avalanche" and Presley's "in the ghetto".
I LOVE THIS ALBUM

JAMES REYNE  "design for living" cd, 1999.

fifth solo set from this Aussie alt-rocker.
had gone from one of the biggest bands in the country (Australian Crawl) in the 1980s to
this one not even charting two decades later, even when he still sold out live shows across the country...weird???
had forgotten I owned this one (and two other by him),
found then tucked into a box of old cassettes for some strange reason???
anyway,
good eclectic mix of rock, pop, ballads and even a dance-cum-reggae type tune.
probably my favourite of the handful of solo albums of his I own.
I LOVE THIS ALBUM

JAMES REYNE "speedboats for breakfast" cd, 2004

one of those albums whose cover could qualify for 'worst album cover'.
his sixth studio set.
another good album from Mr.R.
one cover on it, ONJ's "have you ever been mellow?" in which he plays it
with all the urgency of punk-rock, not bad, better than Olivia's IMO.
all up though not a bad album, a few love tracks, mostly likes.

SEX PISTOLS  "never mind the bollocks....here's the sex pistols"  vinyl/cd  1977

retuning to an old friend this weekend
made it a John Lydon one.
listened yesterday, never got a chance to post.
their debut and only studio album.
has influenced as many artists as any other group in history.
one of the most iconic album covers of all time.
its on full speed from the get-go and doesnt let up for the entire 38 minutes.
theres only two absolute essential punk albums you should own, this one,
and The Clash's debut album IMO.
turned the music world upside down in the same way as Elvis on Ed Sullivan,
Beatles' Sgt Pepper or DSOTM.
an absolute masterpiece.
I believe its one of those albums that everybody should listen to at least once in their lives!
I LOVE THIS ALBUM.

I wont post the 'usual suspects' this time but a pretty confronting song about abortion.

She was a girl from Birmingham
She just had an abortion
She was a case of insanity
Her name was Pauline she lived in a tree

She was a no-one who killed her baby
She sent her letters from the country
She was an animal
She was a bloody disgrace

Body I'm not an animal
Body I'm not an animal

Dragged on a table in a factory
Illegitimate place to be
In a packet in a lavatory
Die little baby screaming

Body screaming fucking bloody mess
Not an animal it's an abortion

Body I'm not an animal
Mummy I'm an abortion

Throbbing squirm, gurgling bloody mess
I'm not a discharge
I'm not a loss in protein
I'm not a throbbing squirm

Ah! Fuck this and fuck that
Fuck it all tha fuck out of the fucking brat
She don't wanna a baby that looks like that
I don't wanna a baby that looks like that.

Body I'm not an animal
Body, an abortion

Body I'm not an animal
Body I'm not an animal
An animal
I'm not an animal
I'm not an animal, an animal, an-an-an animal
I'm not a body
I'm not an animal, an animal, an-an-an animal
I'm not an animal
Mummy! Ugh!

PUBLIC IMAGE LIMITED aka  PiL  "public image: first issue" cd, 1978

another album played yesterday, in keeping with my John Lydon weekend.
their debut album of ten, I own three and a live album.
elements of punk, funk, disco/dance.
also probably the earliest examples of what is now called 'drum and bass' music.
loving just about everything on this album this time round because I was in the mood to
listen to it.
I LOVE THIS ALBUM

an extremely cynical look at organised religion:

Stained glass windows keep the cold outside
While the hypocrites hide inside
With the lies of statues in their minds
Where the Christian religion made them blind
Where they hide
And prey to the God of a bitch spelled backwards is dog
Not for one race, one creed, one world
But for money
Effective
Absurd

Do you pray to the Holy Ghost when you suck your host
Do you read who's dead in the Irish Post
Do you give away the cash you can't afford
On bended knees and pray to lord

Fat pig priest
Sanctimonious smiles
He takes the money
You take the lies
This is religion and Jesus Christ
This is religion cheaply priced
This is bibles full of libel
This is sin in eternal hymn
This is what they've done
This is your religion
The apostles were eleven
Now there's a sod in Heaven

This is religion
There's a liar on the altar
The sermon never falter
This is religion
Your religion

SEX PISTOLS "the great rock and roll swindle - OST" vinyl, cd 1979

the third of my John Lydon weekend plays.
soundtrack to a movie starring the band.
some tracks with Lydon on vocals, others Sid Vicious and others featuring
Eddie Tenpole Tudor , who filled on once Vicious overdosed.
some seriously good tracks on here, Vicious taking the lead on two Eddie Cochran covers
which are more guitar driven than the originals.
some pisstakes also with the band making a mockery of "rock around the clock". "johnny b goode"
and Sinatra's "my way"
album was the start of the flogging a dead horse with compilations being issued on an annual
basis, not bad for a band who only made one album.
album is pretty chaotic in nature and that does sum them up after Lydon's departure
I LIKE THIS ALBUM

love this sea-shanty Pistol style LOL

It was on the good ship Venus
By Christ, ya shoulda seen us
The figurehead was a whore in bed
And the mast, a mammoth penis

The captain of this lugger
He was a dirty bugger
He wasn't fit to shovel shit
From one place to another

[Chorus:]
Friggin' in the riggin'
Friggin' in the riggin'
Friggin' in the riggin'
There was fuck all else to do

The captain's name was Morgan
By Christ, he was a gorgon
Ten times a day he'd stop and play
With his fuckin' organ

The first mate's name was Cooper
By Christ he was a trooper.
He jerked and jerked until he worked
Himself into a stupor

[Chorus]

The second mate was Andy
By Christ, he had a dandy
Till they crushed his cock on a jagged rock
For cumming in the brandy

The cabin boy was Flipper
He was a fuckin' nigger
He stuffed his ass with broken glass
And circumcised the skipper

[Chorus]

The Captain's wife was Mabel
To fuck she was not able
So the dirty shits, they nailed her tits
Across the barroom table

The Captain had a daughter
Who fell in deep sea water
And by her squeals we knew the eels
Had found 'er sexual quarters

[Chorus]
"BTO....Bachman,Turner,Overweight
They were big in the 70s....for five minutes,on a Saturday,after lunch..."  -  Me 2014.
