What Are You Listening To?

GLENN MILLER  "the essential glenn miller"  cd,  2005:

career spanning double disc set.....
some thirty-eight tracks eaturing the GM Orchestra mostly but also the GM Army Air Force Band...
already knew most of the tracks which sound good as one off listens on the radio or on tv shows etc
but to listen to all those tracks back to back is a bit tedious to say the least...
that said, he was the most revered Band Leader not only of the day but throughout music history...
he was a perfectionist and a tyrant to work for, but hey, aren't all the greats from any era...
then theres the mystery of his disappearance of his plane, but that's another story...
no matter how tedious the album was in one sit down listen its still impossible not to tap your feet
to most of it...

his signature tune:

"BTO....Bachman,Turner,Overweight
They were big in the 70s....for five minutes,on a Saturday,after lunch..."  -  Me 2014.

NEIL FINN  "out of silence"  cd, 2017:

fifth studio solo album....
don't expect the pop jingles of Crowded House/Split Enz because you aint gonna get it...
piano based melancholy orchestrated songs here...
we see Finn in a reflective mood on this one, not reflective as in 'disappointments' and 'should have beens..' , just
looking back on the life he has had, no regrets!
older brother Tim pops up on one track, a lovely surprise...
album tracks were rehearsed live via his website every Friday for a couple of months, I watched some of them
and it was interesting to view the process of creating music/songs and obviously how they evolve to the finished product...
a classy album from whom I consider to be the best pop songwriter since Lennon/McCartney showed the world how to do it!
a classy album fro

the superb opening ,almost Lennon-esque, track:

"BTO....Bachman,Turner,Overweight
They were big in the 70s....for five minutes,on a Saturday,after lunch..."  -  Me 2014.

JAMIROQUAI  "high times -  singles 1992-2006" cd,  2006

UK jazz-fusion band...
despite that, they've had a lot of international success over the last couple of decades...
its poppy, its funky, its r+b...its cool as ice...
hear Stevie Wonder all through this one, a solid compilation, all killer and no filler!

the mega hit that gave them their one and only Grammy:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4JkIs37a2JE  (video)

and my favourite of theirs:

"BTO....Bachman,Turner,Overweight
They were big in the 70s....for five minutes,on a Saturday,after lunch..."  -  Me 2014.

SHIRLEY BASSEY  "the impossible dream"  vinyl,  1968

sorry, cannot find the album cover on any of the regular pages I look for them...
anyway, a ten track compilation from back in the day...
I could listen to her sing all day and still not get bored...
today's female singers sure could learn a lot about singing from Ms Bassey...
Im pretty sure this is the only vinyl album o hers I own, I really should get a cd compilation at some point!

I just checked, Dame Bassey is still alive, 81 as told by Wiki...
will be a sad day for entertainment when she passes on,

anyway,
difficult choice for a linked track from this album but here goes:

"BTO....Bachman,Turner,Overweight
They were big in the 70s....for five minutes,on a Saturday,after lunch..."  -  Me 2014.

PAUL ANKA  "goodnight my love"  vinyl,  1969:

have no idea where or when the heck I got this one????
half the tracks are Anka originals, the other half is covers....
still has a cool voice, but the song selection blah!

the lead off single, track one- side one, and one of the few he wrote:

"BTO....Bachman,Turner,Overweight
They were big in the 70s....for five minutes,on a Saturday,after lunch..."  -  Me 2014.

BARBRA STREISAND  "guilty"  vinyl,  1980

Barbie's twenty-second studio set....
I must have purchased this second hand somewhere because theres no way I would have bought this back in the
the day, I was too much into punk and new wave to be bothered with this one...
as you can guess by the cover a Bee Gee was involved in it...
Barry to be precise, writing and producing most tracks here...
even a couple of duets thrown in for good measure...
songs are typically Bee Gee sounding and yes Barbra does a good job overall....

this one is an absolute classic IMO:

"BTO....Bachman,Turner,Overweight
They were big in the 70s....for five minutes,on a Saturday,after lunch..."  -  Me 2014.

ANNIE LENNOX  "the annie lennox collection"  cd,  2009:

fourteen track compilation from the first seven years of her solo career...
some Eurythmics sounding material on here, but the vast majority is more mature...
a classy singer, a classy writer and a very good collection of tracks.

not my favourite off the album but a very very good cover of the Procol Harum classic:
BTW, whats with the stupid clown suit shes wearing in the live clip????

"BTO....Bachman,Turner,Overweight
They were big in the 70s....for five minutes,on a Saturday,after lunch..."  -  Me 2014.

JOHNNY MATHIS  "the essential....."  cd,  2004:

double cd, thirty-nine tracks in total...
not all hits but a good cross section of his career...
the guy was a crooner, one of the best...
that silky smooth voice, I could listen to him all day...
a legend and still performing at the ripe young age of 82....
guessing he could be on his way to Rock And Roll Heaven in th next handful of years...
awesome cd, fantastic songs, love it!

my favourite track of his:

"BTO....Bachman,Turner,Overweight
They were big in the 70s....for five minutes,on a Saturday,after lunch..."  -  Me 2014.
