Before now, I could have sworn it was the meteor..
The religious leaders did manage to hide this from us for quite a long time. 
Not all of them disappeared - a few of them survived and evolved into birds. They've been there seen it all, so they spend most of their time sitting on fences watching us. They will have the last laugh.
