UK song charts for week ending 23rd December 2016:



Clean Bandit bring home the most coveted chart accolade of the year – the Official Christmas Number 1 2016, with their huge chart smash Rockabye, the OfficialCharts.com can confirm.The classical crossover trio have held off competition from Rag‘n’Bone Man, Little Mix and a raft of campaigns and charity singles with Rockabye, a song that first entered the chart nine weeks ago, before later climbing to the top spot to score an impressive seven-week reign at Number 1.
In that time Rockabye has become one of the year’s biggest hits across both downloads and streams, racking up 589,000 combined chart sales to date.
To have been Number 1 for seven weeks is something amazing in its own right that we are all incredibly proud of, but to now be Christmas Number 1 is mind-blowing," they said. "It’s something we never imagined would happen with Rockabye when we were writing and recording it. Thanks to everyone who has made this happen! We hope you all have a Merry Christmas and New Year!"
The group also reveal in the video that they considered recording a Christmas version of the track, and, while Jack quipped that his mum has a theory Rockabye is in fact about Jesus.
Celebrating Clean Bandit's achievement, Ben Cook, President of the band's label Atlantic Records, said: "This is the most highly contested Number 1 chart position of the year and I’d like to congratulate Jack, Grace and Luke on achieving this incredible milestone and an impressive seven weeks at Number 1.
"Credit also goes to Anne-Marie and Sean Paul for amazing vocal performances and I’d like to thank the wider Atlantic and Warner Music teams who have worked hard to deliver the track so well here and abroad."
Clean Bandit join several other acts across history whose tracks were already in residence on the Official Chart throne before eventually clinching the Christmas Number 1. The likes of the Human League’s Don't You Want Me (1981), Whitney Houston's I Will Always Love You (1992), East 17's Stay Another Day (1994), and even Mr Blobby, who hit Number 1 in early December 1993, before being toppled by Take That’s Babe, only to then reclaim the top spot in time for Christmas.

Meanwhile, Clean Bandit have held off competition from breakthrough star and BRITS Critics Choice winner Rag ‘n’ Bone Man who finishes the race in second place with his track Human.
One Direction’s Louis Tomlinson and Steve Aoki slip down one place to Number 3 with Just Hold On, Little Mix new single Touch leaps 19 places this week to land at Number 4, while Zara Larsson’s I Would Like secures its first appearance inside the Top 10 at Number 6.
[h=4]New entries and high climbers[/h]This year’s race welcomed a host of new contenders battling for the Christmas Number 1 crown, many raising money for worthy causes.

Rangers football fans delivered the highest-charting ‘campaign’ this week, pushing Glad All Over by The Dave Clark Five back into the Official Chart in support of striker Joe Garner, following their 2-1 win over Hamilton last weekend. Glad All Over originally topped the Official Singles Chart back in 1963, toppling The Beatles’ I Wanna Hold Your Hand.
Inspiral Carpets fans helped the Manchester band’s 1994 hit Saturn 5 to its first chart appearance (48) in nearly 23 years, in tribute to drummer Craig Gill who sadly passed away last month.
London Hospices Choir – a team of volunteers and staff from 18 hospices across London debut at Number 81 with their cover of Mike & The Mechanics’ The Living Years.

Yorkshire’s Everley Pregnant Brothers’ and their rework of Kings of Leon’s Sex On Fire, Chip Pan, debuts at (131), while You Can’t Always Get What You Want by Friends Of Jo Cox released in memory of the late politician who was tragically murdered earlier this year in Birstall, West Yorkshire ends the week at 136. Salford’s James ‘Shinny’ Davenport finishes at 252 with Christmas Number 1, and Hartlepool’s Liv ‘N’ G land at 280 with Our Superhero (A Christmas Wish).
Festive songs account for nearly one third of this week’s Official Singles Chart Top 100, with a whole host of seasonal classics jingling all the way into the Top 40, led by Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas Is You (5), the song’s highest peak since 2007, The Pogues ft. Kirsty Maccoll’s Fairytale Of New York (15), Wham’s Last Christmas (16), Shakin’ Stevens’ Merry Christmas Everyone (22), Chris Rea’s Driving Home for Christmas (26), Wizzard’s I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday (27) and Band Aid’s Do They Know It’s Christmas (35). Festive songs account for Michael Buble’s It’s Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas hits a new peak of 38, and Slade’s Merry Christmas Everybody (39).

Michael Ball and Alfie Boe have gone one better than last week's Number 1 - they're officially the holders of the UK's Christmas Number 1 album.Ball & Boe's Together accumulated a further 110,000 combined chart sales, 98% of which was made up by physical sales - that's a lot of Christmas presents. Alfie's first ever Number 1 record and Michael's first for 24 years, Together has secured its best tally of sales yet to secure not only the coveted Xmas chart topping status, but also the title of being the biggest selling artist album released in 2016.
"It's a dream come true," Ball & Boe told OfficialCharts.com. "There's only one thing better than having a Number 1 album and that's having a Christmas Number 1 album. A huge thanks to everyone who bought the album. Our hearts go out to you all for Christmas. We hope we entertain you with the album for Christmas and lots of love to everyone."

Only David Bowie's Blackstar has managed to achieve a higher number of chart sales within a single week in 2016, and was the year's fastest-selling release.
[h=4]New entries and high climbers[/h]The Christmas Top 5 is completed by Little Mix who rise one place to Number 2 with Glory Days, The Wonder of You by Elvis Presley at 3, last week's Number 2 The Rolling Stones' Blue & Lonesome (4) and Olly Murs' 24 HRS which holds at Number 5.
Bruno Mars' 24K Magic rises two places to a slick Number 7 at Christmas while Adele's 25 sticks around in the Top 40 for a 57th straight week, up three spots to Number 13. David Bowie's Legacy compilation jolts four places to Number 16, and Aled Jones' One Voice at Christmas reaches a new peak of 22, up two.
Jack Savoretti's Sleep No More leaps 35 placings to Number 31 after his performance on The Graham Norton Show and The 1975's I Like It When You Sleep scores a huge uplift of 11 places to Number 39 after a £3.99 promotion on iTunes.

I suppose that Clean Bandit track is not bad as far as dance songs do - it has the usual obligatory annoying rap-style shouting between the lines of the song.

The lyrics are quite heart-warming too - but how come no one seems to mention how totally at odds they are with the music? If it's supposed to be a lullaby, I can't imagine Junior nodding off while that song is going.

For the fourth week in a row, Clean Bandit holds the #1 spot on the ARIA Singles Chart with ‘Rockabye’.
The Weeknd’s ‘Starboy’ remains at #2 this week on the ARIA Singles Chart. With his tenth week at #2 with ‘Starboy’, Canadian artist The Weeknd has this week equalled the record for the most weeks spent at #2 without ever reaching number one on the ARIA Singles Chart. ‘Starboy' joins Maroon 5 featuring Christina Aguilera ‘Moves Like Jagger’ (#2 Aug. ’11) as the record holders.
Peking Duk’s ‘Stranger’ continues its climb back up the top 10 of the ARIA Singles Chart.
With a move of 19 spots, ‘Call On Me - Ryan Riback Remix’ snares a new peak in its fifth week in the top 50.
Mariah Carey’s Christmas classic ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’ jumps back into the ARIA top 20 Singles Chart for the first time in 2016. ‘All I Want For Christmas’ reached its all-time peak of #2 in December 1994, which it held for two straight weeks.
This week also sees Mura Masa Feat. A$ap Rocky’s ‘Love$ick’ climb back up the ARIA Singles Chart to #25.

For a second week running, John Farnham & Olivia Newton-John hold the #1 spot on the ARIA Albums Chart with ‘Friends For Christmas’
In its fifth week in the top 50, the soundtrack to the new film ‘Trolls’ continues its rise back up the top 10 to its previous peak position of #6.
Moving up fourspots, Bruno Mars’ ‘24K Magic’ climbs back into the Top 10 of the ARIA Albums Chart, while Guy Sebastian’s ‘Part 1 – EP’ also makes its way back into the ARIA Top 50 Album Chart to number 33.
As well as Friends For Christmas at #1, there’s eight other Christmas albums in this week’s top 50: Michael Bublé’s Christmas (#2), Mariah Carey’s Merry Christmas (#17), Pentatonix’s A Pentatonix Christmas (#22). and I laughed immediately,
when my twins were born back in 1989, my son had really back colic from day one,
he'd be up all day and night screaming in pain from it,
so at night time after mum fed him I would walk around the lounge trying to get him relaxed to go to sleep
and because I was up for anything to a couple of hours trying to settle him I usually put on some music to at least
listen to,
I tried bits of classical, soft pop/rock as in soothing mellow sot pop/rock, nothing worked,
one night I put on AC/DC's "razors edge" album, by the time Thunderstruck was finished my son was asleep,
I thought it was a one off fluke, but everynight I played Thunderstruck he was asleep in minutes...go figure!

They’ve dominated the chart in the run up to Christmas and today Clean Bandit’s Rockabye keeps its place at Number 1 on the last Official Singles Chart of the year.After bagging this year’s Official Christmas Number 1 last week, Rockabye remains a staggeringly popular record in Britain. This week, predominantly driven by downloads, Rockabye holding firm to log an eighth week at the summit.
Rockabye is the most purchased track of the week in the UK, racking up 44,000 downloads plus 3.4 million streams. Rockabye is the second-longest running chart-topper of the year behind Drake’s One Dance (15 weeks).

Meanwhile, Zara Larsson claims a new personal best with I Would Like, which rises four places to the Number 2 slot. Her previous highest-charting song is the Number 3-peaking Lush Life.

Little Mix’s Glory Days has reclaimed pole position on the final Official Albums Chart of 2016.The group’s fourth studio collection returns to Number 1 today (December 30) for a third non-consecutive week. The album, Little Mix’s first chart-topping album, hasn’t left the Top 5 since its release in November.
Glory Days, which includes the chart topping single Shout Out To My Ex, last month became the fastest-selling album by a British girl group since The Spice Girls’ Spiceworld (1997).
Glory Days is also the first girl group album to log more than one week at Number 1 in the UK since Destiny’s Child’s Survivor, which logged four non-consecutive stints at the top across 2001/2002.

It’s week five at the top spot of the ARIA Singles Chart for Clean Bandit’s ‘Rockabye’. The track is currently #1 on the UK Singles Chart for an eighth straight week.
The Weeknd holds #2 again with ‘Starboy’. It’s the single’s eleventh week at #2, breaking the ARIA Singles Chart record for most weeks spent at #2 without ever reaching #1. It claims the record from Maroon 5’s ‘Moves Like Jagger’ (#2 Aug. ’11), which spent ten weeks at #2.
Jumping up five spots, The Chainsmokers’ ‘Closer‘ returns to the top five for 22nd week. The duo has two other tracks in the top 50, with ‘All We Know’ and ‘Don’t Let Me Down’ sitting at #37 and #46 respectively.
With a move of seven spots to #9, Justin Timberlake’s ‘Can’t Stop That Feeling’ jumps back into the top 10 for a fourteenth week. The move comes as the Trolls soundtrack holds #6 for a second straight week.
George Michael’s passing has pushed Wham’s ‘Last Christmas’ (#3 Dec. ’84) back into the chart at #23. His solo hit ‘Faith’ (#2 Dec. 87) has managed to scrape in at #50.
Debuts:
#43: Pnau ‘Chameleon’ – Sydney electronic act Pnau release their first single in four years, ‘Chameleon’. It’s their first single from their forthcoming fifth album. ‘Chameleon’ is Pnau’s second track to hit the ARIA top 50, following on from ‘Baby’ (#34 Mar. ’08).

After missing out on the top spot last year, Michael Bublé has hit #1 on the ARIA Albums Chart for a fourteenth week with Christmas. The album spent five straight weeks at #1 on debut in 2011. It went on to spend four weeks at #1 in 2012, three weeks at #1 on 2013 and one week at #1 in 2014.
With the untimely passing of English singer, songwriter, producer and pop icon George Michael, sales of his music have experienced a spike. Two compilations, Twenty Five (#9 Mar. ’10) and Ladies & Gentlemen... The Best Of... (#2 Nov. ’98) have re-entered the top 50 at #11 and #14, respectively. In the second half of the top 50, Michael's debut solo album Faith has re-entered at #53 and live album Symphonica hits #83. Wham’s The Final has re-entered at #80.
After debuting at #42 last week, the soundtrack to Sing has jumped 21 spots to #21.
Flume’s ARIA Album Of The Year winner Skin is up eight spots to #23.
Cold Chisel’s The Best Of Cold Chisel – All For You re-enters at #27.
Debuts:
#42: Soundtrack ‘Moana’ – The soundtrack to new Disney animated film Moana features tracks composed by Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, as well as composer Mark Mancina and Samoan singer-songwriter Opetaia Foa'i.
