Streetlight Manifesto.
They're really good.

Old school Ska would be Sublime and Bob Marley.
Stuff like that.

But I love the new Ska-Punk
Which would be bands like Streetlight Manifesto and NoFX which I like.
And Reel Big Fish, which I've never heard much of.
Usually it's a punk band with a horn section, trumpets and whatnot I believe.
Anyone can correct me if I'm wrong...
But I'm pretty sure.

There be flavours three of Ska:

Ska - early/mid 60s music from Jamacia, the nation's own version of the US R&B, with a "skanking" rhythm that no US group ever had. The major group of this style was (and is) The Skatalites, who I narrowly missed going to see last year (I'm still kicking myself). Also notable are Prince Buster, Desmond Dekker and The Ethiopians. Bob Marley's very early stuff could sometimes qualify as ska, incidentally.

2-tone ska: British bands of the late 70s/early 80s who were inspired by the ska records coming out of Jamacia. Examples include Madness, The Selector, and the Specials (who I did manage to see, at T in the Park, and they were amazing).

Ska-Punk: (In my opinion) one of the worst genres ever shat out by anyone. What a great idea, take a genre requiring skilled musicians who can play together perfectly, and get "punk rockers" to do it. This abomination rose from the suburbs in the late 80s and hasn't been successfully put down yet. Examples include Rancid, No Doubt, Less Than Jake and Reel Big Fish. The originator of this style, Operation Ivy, is a vaguely passable group, though; the crowning achievement of the style.

Went to see an up-&-coming Ska band at the Indigo2 in London last week.

Wanted to try out the venue anyway, so took the opportunity (Didn't like the place).

The Dualers are an unsigned 10-piece Ska band from SE London. They are very good, and have spread the word by extensively busking in the south of the UK, which is where Mrs Tiggi discovered them.

Incidentally, they recently made waves by refusing to relinquish the venue to Michael Jackson for an after-show party, as he was due to be playing the adjacent Arena that night. Jackson's people were quite unpleasant, apparently...

that explains alot! thanks! i originally thought ska was something else due to a band called oreskaband... which were frankly not my style. i guess they qualify as ska but the song i heard (yeah! ska dance) made me think all ska was like that. yuck! it sounds like a horribly done anime cartoon theme song! thank you for clearing that up!:biggrin:

I love Ska and Reggae. I still listen to old bands like Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Quino and Friends, and Reel Big fish. Has anyone heard of these bands? I would definitely recommend them,
