Where to start with Queen
#1
A few weeks ago, I have completed a Pink Floyd collection consisting of all 15 of the studio albums. It all started with Dark Side, then it went on to Division Bell, Wish You Were Here and The Wall. The rest came in no particular order until I completed the story with the book ends (Piper and The Endless River). WOW! What I own I can truly be proud of!

Anyway, I always considered to start a complete Queen collection of all of their 15 studio albums. The best place to start a Pink Floyd collection is Dark Side, obviously. But what's the best album (or sets of albums) to start with Queen?

Thanks in advance!

well done, a complete collection of an artist in several weeks....

ok, so with Queen,
I own most of their studio albums...

my personal favourite by a country mile is this one from 1980:

"a night at the opera" and "a day at the races" are also pretty good....
I like "news of the world" and the "Flash Gordon" movie soundtrack, but that one is mostly instrumentals, an interesting album!

of the other six or seven I own I find there is a lot of filler on the albums,
ALL of the Queen albums released after 1980's "the game" have a lot of synth work and not so much of May's epic guitar solos which I believe makes Queen
the band they are.

personally, I would stick with "the game", "a night at the opera" and "a day at the races" and then the compilations, but that's just my opinion, hope it helps.

A Night at the Opera is a masterpiece IMO. Such an eclectic package of material. Never to be repeated. I never bought any of their other albums but I do like some tracks off different albums. But 'Opera' is the one to buy. Just plain brilliant. As for your Floyd collection - Dark Side. Meddle, The Wall, Animals, Obscured, Wish You Were Here (my favourite of all time), Momentary Lapse, Division Bell and the oft forgotten 'The Final Cut' (which is beyond brilliant IMO). You should really add some of the solo albums to your collection.

Gilmour - David Gilmour, About Face & Rattle That Lock
Wright - Wet Dream & Broken China
Waters - Amused to Death, Radio KAOS & The Pros & Cons of Hitchhiking

Amazing how so much talent was contained in one band.

ANATO is worth the money for Bohemian Rhapsody alone,
And come to think of it that track isn't head and shoulders above the rest of the album as you'd expect, so I guess that makes it brilliant,

Jerome, have you heard The Game?
If not search for "sail away sweet sister" and "save me" from the album,
they're Queen's two best ballads IMO, Freddie is at his vocal best on those ones IMO.

Nice. I also know that Jazz contains Can't Stop Me Now. Amazing song! Okay, I'll check out some of these albums. Thanks.

With regards to 'The Game', no I have not. I never really listened to any other queen albums after ANATO. Did buy 'Live Killers' but it did not live up to expectation. It was good but not brilliant.

Let's see I like Queen's classic album A Night At The Opera but also Jazz, A Day At The Races, and The Game too. If you want to get into Queen, ADATO is your go-to album for them and it's their most renowned one.

Edit: I didn't list Sheer Heart Attack, silly me. It's also a good album.
