What Are You Listening To?
^^You lost me there, but given the name I have a sneaking suspicion I'll be sorry if I look it up!
Or not? Oh damn. I'm gonna do it.

KANSAS "the best of Kansas" cd, 1984

career stats:
studio albums........14
singles..................25

this album...............#154 US...#86 CAN

compilation that pretty much covers their first decade of recorded music....
knowledge of them was pretty well nothing until I bought this one as a starting point...
album makes the passing grade for me but I wouldn't rush out to buy any studio albums of theirs...
that said, "carry on wayward son" and "point of no return" are sublime pieces of work IMO....
both of which I could listen to every day and not get bored with them...
a few duds on here for me, but then again im not really a prog rock type of guy.

I LIKE THIS ALBUM

worst track: fight fire with fire
best track: carry on wayward son

Most people only know Kansas from Dust In the Wind, which is probably their best song but hardly typical.

My main problem with Kansas is that apart from said Dust song, their sound stays much the same and gets a little wearing. A bit like Rush, though they are more interesting than Rush.

QUEEN "queen" cd, 1973

career stats:
studio albums........15
singles..................72

this album...............324 UK...#77 AU...#83 US
singles:
"keep yourself alive"....no chart action
"liar".........................no chart action

debut set.....
it failed to chart in the UK until after the success of their third album "news of the world"....
very little of the Queen sound we all know and love on this one...
closer to the heavy metal sounds of the time with a couple of ballads thrown in the mix...
like I said, little of their sounds, May's unique guitar sound is only heard in a few little places...
their catchy hooks are few and fair between and Mercury's vocals are more restrained than we
have come to know and respect...
cant stand half this album and the other half barely makes the grade for me...
but it shows just how quickly they developed their sound after this one with albums two and three
coming out in the following year and as we know "news of the world" contained "we are the champions"
and "we will rock you" and the rest is history...

I DO NOT LIKE THIS ALBUM

worst track: modern times rock and roll
best track: keep yourself alive

tracks:

1...keep yourself alive **
2...doing all right *
3...great king rat **
4...my fairy king **
5...liar **
6...the night comes down *
7...modern times rock and roll *
8...son and daughter *
9...Jesus **
10.seven seas of Rhye..... (instrumental) *

a Christian rock band from Memphis apparently, heres their Wiki page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skillet_(band)

cant say ive heard any of their music as Christian rock is not something im into...

my opinon of it is pretty much the same as Billy Connolly's...

"Christian rock".... hmmmm

If someone's a Christian, or a Buddhist, or a Muslim or whatever, I don't mind them revealing that in their song lyrics - just so long as they don't use songs to preach.

Jimmy Webb, for example, is a Christian, and there are one or two of his songs that reference his faith, but if all Christian rock was as good as that I would have no problem with it.

Lately I have been glued to simple songs, easier to play guitar tabs or the melody!
