I've always loved the soundtracks of movies and TV shows and decided to make my own music for one. It's not going well. I have the ideas but lack the musical background. I've written some short pieces on a piece of computer software that doesn't give very realistic sounds to anything other than piano.
If anyone has some recommendations for how I can find out if these compositions will actually sound good, I'd like to hear it. I've also written several songs but still don't quite know how to write music.

My favorite artists range from in the classical genre Sergei Prokofiev I think my favorite to Johann Strauss I, II Eduard Strauss, Josef Strauss and another favorite composer. Camille Saint-Säens. Héctor Berlioz is alright too. As for modern classical... Mike Post all the way.

Lyrical music is divided between old and new. Some Nights (the clean version) being my all time favorite of new music. The Climb and Firework are another couple of modern favorites while Don't Mess Around With Jim, and Carmen San Diego are also favorites. It's Still Rock'n'roll to me is another favorite as is Keep your Head Up. So I'm all over the place. Hope this gives you something to judge me by.

Unfortunately I'm new to trying to utilize internet support. I'm still trying to figure out posting on youtube.
My equipment is a laptop bought somewhere between 2000 and 2009 and Music Write Plus that only allows me to write for one instrument at a time. I then have to record it all each instrument at a time through a cheap microphone then splice the clips together in sound recorder a software that came with the laptop.
In case you haven't figured it out. Money's the biggest obstacle. I like the short pieces I have. I just can't figure out if they'd still sound good played by real instruments.

Start with reading up on the technology - The Producer's Manual by Paul White is a very good starting point. You should also be able to export your scores as MIDI files and then load that in a multitrack recording package (there are free ones available) - just search for free DAW (Digital Audio Workstation). As regard decent sounds, you will need an audio interface and some VST's (Virtual Studio Technology instruments) That will give you an idea of what the piece will sound like. Send me a midi file if you can - I might be able to give you an idea of what's possible - and do not worry I won't be stealing any of your work. Just trying to help.
