What Are You Listening To?
Drumattica - Face the Astronaut
I think music in itself is healing. It's an explosive expression of humanity. It's something we are all touched by. No matter what culture we're from, everyone loves music

Vertical Horizon - Burning The Days - 2009

Six years since the last release for these DC rockers, who launched in 1991 as an acoustic act. This is their sixth album, resulting in some sort of prog rock I guess, with Rush's Neal Peart on some tracks. No doubt some of this would grow on me after a few listenings.

I like this album.

Favorite Track - Save Me From Myself

The clouds are rollin´ in
Who will watch them?
The waves are strong
The boat is gone
I hope they´re swimming

Little boy lost in the woods
Where´s the clearing?
The town is out
They´re calling loud
But he´s not hearing

It seems to me I´m always miles away
Looking for my old face

Save me from myself
I can´t relate
We´re mouth to mouth
And still I suffocate
There´s nothing left
Inside for me to break
Save me from myself

The bullet in the yard
Is slowly rusting
The bottles crack
The kid´s come back
And I´m just looking

The wine is on the floor
The candles flicker
Your eyes fall
And I´m apalled
It´s all just cinder

It seems to me we´re always miles apart
Trying to find another place to start

Save me from myself
I can´t relate
We´re mouth to mouth
And still I suffocate
There´s nothing left
Inside for me to break
Save me from myself

The sailors never left
They knew the weather
When they were found
They were having drinks together

They found the little boy
In the grocery
Happy endings all around
And still they haunt me

Save me from myself
I can´t relate
We´re mouth to mouth
And still I suffocate
There´s nothing left
Inside of me to break
Save me from myself

Save me from myself
There´s nothing left inside me
There´s nothing left

Guess Who - Artificial Paradise - 1973

Canadian rockers with their 14th album. Always liked these guys. Burton Cummings had a great voice and Randy Bachman was one of the original founders. He left the group in 1970. They were never super stars, well maybe in Canada, but lasted a long time just plugging away with standard rock 'n' roll. Officially disbanded in 1975 when Cummings decoded to pursue a solo career. This album peaked at #110, with my favorite track being the only single to chart, at a whopping #61.

I like this album.

Favorite Track - Follow You Daughter Home

Hey man, follow your daughter home.
Hey man, follow your daughter home.
Hey man, follow your daughter home.

Keep her out of trouble, follow your daughter home.
Staying out late in the bar with the bad men, follow your daughter home.
Keep her out of mischief, follow your daughter home.
What are the boys like she's stayin' and sleepin' with, follow your daughter home.
Watch her! [spoken]
Hey man, follow your daughter home.
Hey man, follow your daughter home.

Keep her out of mischief, follow your daughter home.
What are the boys like she's runnin' and dancin' with, follow your daughter home.
Is she still a virgin, follow your daughter home.
Staying out late with the boys past midnight, follow your daughter home.
Tie her up! [spoken]
Hey man, follow your daughter home.
Hey man, follow your daughter home.

Keep her out of trouble, follow your daughter home.
Staying out late in the bar with the bad men, follow your daughter home.
Keep her out of mischief, follow your daughter home.
You're asking lotsa questions 'bout the boys she's sleepin' with, follow your daughter home.
Watch her, watch her! [spoken]

Hey man, follow your daughter home.
Hey man, follow you daughter home.
A lovely young woman now.
Hey man, follow your daughter home.
Hey man, follow you daughter home.
Watch her! [spoken]
Hey, follow your daughter home.

Genesis - Duke - 1980

Tenth studio album from these grammy winners, and although good, it was the beginning of their descent for me. The beginning of the move from prog rock to pop rock, and where the group became more about Phil Collins, who later left the band to pursue a solo career. Misunderstanding (#14) and Turn It On Again were the singles. The album reached #11 in the U.S. and became their first #1 album in the U.K. on the strength of those singles. As usual, no clips for my favorite track.

I like this album.

Favorite Track - Alone Tonight

There's nothing here that I can understand
And no one cares I'm a lonely man
I touch your face and I don't know why
I call your name but you're going by
Now I'm alone again.

I have no name for each and every day
Until the year is done and fades away
There's a time in between the two
The old years gone by but it's not the new
And I, I, I...

I know that'll be all
Alone again, alone again tonight oh I'm
Alone again, alone again tonight oh I'm
Alone again, and it seems to me that every time I try to change
Say that you're say that you'll
Help me reach the other side

When the morning comes the sun is out
And warms me up again
What a funny world it is for me
And all I'll never be

It's not enough, it's not enough
This feeling I'm feeling inside
Oh I know it I know tonight that I'll be

On my own tonight, alone again tonight
Oh I'm alone again, alone again tonight
Oh I'm alone again, and it seems to me that everytime I try to change
Say that you'll, say that you'll
Help me reach the other side
Help me please cos I know I'm gonna be
On my own again alone again tonight...

The Band - Greatest Hits - 2000

Founded in 1959 by southerner Ronnie Hawkins as Ronnie & The Hawks, these Canadian rockers were popular on the Toronto club circuit. Ronnie left in 1963 at which time Levon Helm took over and they became Levon & The Hawks. Levon briefly left the band in 1966, but returned in time to begin recording their first album, Music From Big Pink. They eventually found fame as Bob Dylan's backing band. Would they have found it without Bob? I do know the rock press took a liking to the band long before the public did. Known as an album band, their entire career only netted 2 top 40 singles. This is an excellent overview of their best work.

I love this album.

Favorite Track - Up On Cripple Creek

When I get off of this mountain
You know where I want to go
Straight down the Mississippi river
To the Gulf of Mexico
To Lake George, Louisiana
Little Bessie, girl that I once knew
And she told me just to come on by
If there's anything she could do
{Refrain}
Up on Cripple Creek she sends me
If I spring a leak she mends me
I don't have to speak she defends me
A drunkard's dream if I ever did see one
Good luck had just stung me
To the race track I did go
She bet on one horse to win
And I bet on another to show
Odds were in my favor
I had him five to one
When that nag came around the track
Sure enough he had won
{Refrain}
I took up all of my winnings
And I gave my little Bessie half
And she tore it up and blew it in my face
Just for a lauge
Now there's one thing in the whole wide world
I sure would like to see
That's when that little love of mine
Dips her doughnut in my tea
{Refrain}
Now me and my mate were back at the shack
We had Spike Jones on the box
She said, "I can't take the way he sings
But I love to hear him talk"
Now that just gave my heart a fall
To the bottom of my feet
And I swore and I took another pull
My Bessie can't be beat
{Refrain}
Now, it's hot in California
And up north it's pretty cold
And this living off the road
Is getting pretty old
So I guess I'll call up my big mama
Tell her I'll be rolling in
Bet you know, deep down, I'm kinda tempted
To see my sweet Bessie again
{Refrain}
