What Are You Listening To?
#61
Fred Neil-Fred Neil

Very influential singer/songwriter who mentored Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, and, my favorite arist of all-time, Tim Buckley and pioneered a sound that could be heard in music even today. Sadly almost completely unknown. Musically, it has some what of an etheral folk-jazz sound, very similar to Van Morrison. It's a magnificent unheralded classic that I highly recommend

The Brothers fourth studio album. Still hadn't hit the majors yet but already making good music. This doesn't measure up to the last two for me, but it's a fine album. A lot of tracks I love and only the inclusion of the two worthless hidden tracks drug it down, plus like a five minute gap of silence between the last listed track and the start of a repeat of a track already done, scaled down and not as good. A few others I don't care for, but it is 19 tracks, so some duds are warranted I guess. Recorded in a rented house over 10 days. The way music should be recorded. The Avetts upped their sound on this one, from their previous mostly acoustic sets. They were fine before from what I've heard, and this made it better. Kicked up a notch fro some tracks but still some fine mellow stuff too.

I LIKE THIS ALBUM

Worst Track - Honeycutt

Best Track - Left On Laura, Left On Lisa

Nobody knows it but I am so sad
Nobody knows it but I am so sad
And that is the saddest of all my girl
That is the saddest of all

We climbed the ladder to the top of my house
Never letting go of your hand
The sky trades the moon for the sun my girl
The sky trades the moon for the sun

And I gave to you my ugly brown coat
You made it pretty when you put it on
Warmth in the early morning chill my girl
Warmth in the early April

Then you said you’d trade the love of a man
Tears fell soft from your face to my hands
Said you’d trade your heart for mine my girl
I traded my heart for those days

And you made it clear it was strictly a deal
Of springtime love and that’s how I should feel
So I set the clock back an hour my girl
I set the time a just right

You see somewhere back there when I was boy
Furious I had become by the point
That men are just liars and thieves of sorts
Men are just liars and thieves

But I still believe and I stand by my words
I don’t know what you have seen or you’ve heard
But somebody’s lying to you my girl
Somebody’s lying to you

You really made me believe I could stay
Part with you actions in part what you said
But that was just foolish pride my girl
And those are only feelings inside

So I’m going back to the place where we met
I’m going to find the beer bottle we left
Wedged in the limbs of the tree that we sat in
Wedged in the magnolia tree

Well we hid for days like a proud pair of thieves
Too sure we were right too stubborn too leave
Wasted with the moment we lifted my girl
Stolen forever with you

i-Pod listening in the garden this PM.

Ray's second, from 2006.

Quiet, Folkie Singer-Songwriter stuff. Gorgeous songs, perfectly suited to warm, balmy weather.

Ray's voice recalls, by turns, Otis Redding, Paul Rodgers, & Joe Cocker, but a muchly hushed version of each.

Fab album.

AllMusic 4/5 stars.

i-Pod listening in the garden this PM.

Jamaican singer's second album, released in 1978.

Smooth & simple Reggae songs, expertly delivered by ex I-Three, with backing from Sly Dunbar's Revolutionaries.

Reggae & hot weather go hand in hand.

Superb...

AllMusic 4+/5 stars.

This was a bit of a curveball...

Mrs Tiggi spotted a Peruvian ensemble busking yesterday, during her lunch break, and bought a CD of their music.

They play South American Pan Pipes to a backing recording, and turn up in town periodically.

The CD is partly more traditional, with tracks of mainly instrumental Pan Pipe music with some guitars & keys, which sometimes strays perilously close to New Age muzak, and partly almost Trip Hop, with laid-back Dance beats, which comes across something like French outfit Enigma.

I was pleasantly surprised.

Not scored by AllMusic.

Aereo-Plain-John Hartford

Another album which has sadly slipped through the cracks. An excellent piece of progressive bluegrass, with some fantastic lyrics snd arrangements. Again, this obscure classic is very much worth your time

His fourth, from 1964.

Hugely impressive set, for one so young - he was a tender 23 when he made this one - with poetic lyrics that stand the test of time very easily.

Lovely album.

My own copy on shiny silver disc.

As reviewed a few pages back.

Nothing to add, except that this needs adding to your list, SteveO...
