SteveO Wrote:Small world Crazy ! Did you talk music with Hank ?

very little actually SteveO....
he was actually surprised that someone of my age(around18 at the time) knew who he was,let alone all the hits he played on...
after his house was complete he invited all the tradesmen around who worked on it for a bbq...and bugger me, who else turns up?...
none other than Sir Cliff Richard...they jammed on acoustic guitars for a while that hot sunny afternoon singing some of the old hits they had in the 1950s and early 1960s together...
Cliff...too sickly sweet,mr.try-to please-everyone kinda guy...i dont like that,IMO, its all 'false'!
Hank...genuinely nice guy,not egotistical in any way, just down to earth!

How about some current women singers? Sure a bumper crop these days.
Karrin Allyson Ravi Shankar's daughter and Elvis Costello's current wife may get all the press but my money and my ears are on Ms. Allyson (BTW, all 3 are gifted pianists, Ms. Allyson being concert-grade). * 14 discs in 22 years singing in 5 different languages and incorporates no-fake scatting. For more: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karrin_Allyson Enough with the ya-ya:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4lnQslFWzno << Best vocal rendition going
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-msAjws66g4 << some piano on display
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x8A5Yu0opnk << I don't need to understand the lyrics--that voice tears me down...then builds me back up
Lucky us--she has a ton of nmaterial on YouTube.

Holly Cole I know SteveO knows this lass. 14 discs in 15 years, a Juno for best vid, covers everything in the pop realm. Here's more: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holly_Cole Songs:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7F4q4fmxSF8 << one of my wack 2-fers
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xJgxO6CVUec << makes every song her own
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-a_Iy3VoWJM
BONUS: near 2 hours of her magnificent self: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XmhIVEOgTbk

Stacey Kent North New Jersey's gift to the world. Another multilingual singer. 10 discs in 17 years + 3 more with her husband/saxophonist Jim Tomlinson. Opened for established acts in the mid-'90's at Ronnie Scott's club in London. Here's more: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stacy_kent Some tunes:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hF9FSX0kqr0 << a reason for a French decoration for contributions to French culture
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qwaz20bgsWk
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZL3OWMzb874 << her husband's album
BONUS: full concert 6 years ago: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CgdNZwDUO1A << as 1 commenter said, it really kicks into gear at song #4

Lisa Ekdahl A little fragile/breathy-girlish to me but undeniable talent. Sings mostly in Swedish. Here's more: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lisa_Ekdahl And the songs: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NLD1nxRVU...C5CAF7BF54
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VaW7EiSvjfM
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=42JOswXMm64 << this one rocketed her to stardom

* Just a tease: Norah Jones and Diana Krall, respectively.

Lesley Gore Here's an artist bringing female empowerment to pop music (the wiki calls it "protofeminist). Had to be somewhat subtle about it but who else was doing anything similar? Don't know if she was "out" yet but no matter--she was speaking to all women. Not to over-value her--she was after all a typical-of-the-era pop singer--her music got a lot more political and less interesting in the '90's.

Here's a wild-card for you. Kinky Friedman Bandleader for many years, songwriter and lead singer, mentor to all kinds of musicians and other artists, serious contender twice for Governor of an important state (Texas), humorist, columnist for a respected publication. Did I mention he makes a world-class tequila? He plays a multiple of genres--C&W straight-up, weepers, but mostly his metier is witty, satiric songs about Texas and working folks. I don't claim he's on the hi-falutin' level of Tom Leher nor as down-in-the-alley as the Rev. Billy C. Wirtz; rather he writes so us folks can get a grip and the academics got something to analyze.

Bert Berns Roman Candle of a career--great work as songwriter and producer, and record label owner, for 7 years, then dead of effects of childhood rheumatic problems at 38 (same thing that killed Bobby Darin). American R&B music was greatly enhanced by him and he gave a big boost up to Van Morrison. The story that got me intrigued: http://www.nytimes.com/2014/07/20/arts/m...bered.html The hook for them is a recent biography and an Off-Broadway musical based on his songs. Here's a wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bert_Berns << good list of songwriting and producer credits. He even, 47 years after his passing, has a website. Let's start with comp discs: Twist & Shout: the Bert Berns Story, Vol. 1 available new for $17-20 and Mr. Success: the Bert Berns Story, vol. 2 $14-17 new. The best 1-CD comp is Heart and Soul of Bert Berns at < $6 used. Now finally, the tunes:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iS0wuN_6wyw << Could I ignore this? What planet are you from?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EPWCbthc9tw << wonder if he sang this at that KKK Klavern? It's cross-burning meeting to inspire the "troops"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9EEnQH6GZ9I << a rather different version but it works so well Also produced by Mr. Berns

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a0wQU7fJEVQ << BB was known for adding Latin rhythmic structures to his songs
