When people talk about her voice being knackered near the end of her life, I think they're just missing the point...

I have to honest, Tigger and say that I am probably one of the few that did NOT like Billie's singing as a rule but all that changed for me as she approached her passing. There is a video recording of her singing Fine and Mellow with a veritable 'Supergroup' that includes Lester 'Prez' Young, Harry 'Sweets' Edison, Ben Webster and Gerry Mulligan among others probably less than a year before she died. She looks haggard and the pain is definitely there in the voice but, it is the best that I ever heard her sing.
I have it around here somewhere on either tape or DVD and will try and track it down.

Bebe & Cece Winans - Still - 2009



Although known for their gospel background and family, this Detroit brother and sister act frequently crossover into r&b territory with this release. This is their sixth studio album and I don't know about previous efforts, as far as the mix goes, but this one is about 50/50 with either side passing for the other.

I like this album.

Fourth release from the Brit soul stylist. This one is billed as a return to the roots of her first 2 relases. Didn't here the third, so I wouldn't know. A label dispute has delayed the release of this for some time. Apparently the diva feels her creative juices are being stunted. They seem in full bloom here. The label certainly had the creative juices flowing for the album cover. First single is Free Me.
