I think the reason behind this is because Metal is like self expression. We can release our anger, our happiness and just about anything while we sing. - Ethan

And in a lot of cases, metal allows the musician to explore and expand their instrument moreso than in rock! I'm more interested in metal bands that have a metal tag but are really much more than fast lightning speed guitar playing! Opeth, Anathema, Steven Wilson, Porcupine Tree have shed the pure metal tag and are creating brilliant music!

LOL...I'll throw in Marilyn Manson and the numerous progressive bands in the "metal" category also! If a band plays loud and has screechy vocals and growls they are considered hard rock/metal. I've seen ACDC, Led Zeppelin, Wolfmother ,Trapt, Deep Purple and even Jethro Tull (Heavy Horses) album categorized as heavy metal!...stupid genre game again!..Iron Maiden are certainly not really a bonified heavy metal band..same for Metallica IMHO!...I mean to say their vocals are clean and powerful and they play riffs and licks that could easily be classified as hard rock. True heavy metal are the black metal bands that started in the early 90s in Norway. They are proponents of the dark side of life....doom and gloom themes with harsh death grunts and growls. OK for a listen here and there for a different music experience. Cradle of Filth from England are masters of the macabre....outrageous screechy growly vocals suited for horror movies....however very entertaining at times!
