Can I chime in on Greenday too? I like Greenday but they are what I consider to be a genre of pop-punk that came out in the 90's. They paved the way for Blink 182, The Offspring and Sum 41. All bands I enjoy on some level but not enough to consider them really punk. Other 90's punk bands I actually like are Bad religion, The Descendants, Rancid and Operation Ivy.

I was just gonna mention Operation Ivy. "Energy" is easily one of my favorite punk rock albums, and one of my favorite albums period

Quite a few good bands were already mentioned, and if you would like to dig deeper, there are a few suggestions. First, explore hardcore punk/post-hardcore - nearly every band on Dischord label, founded by Fugazi's Ian McKay will do. A few most important are Black Flag, Bad Brains, and Minor Threat. Second, riot grrrl is a particularly enjoyable genre, I'm personally a fan of X-Ray Spex:

IMHO, your best bet is to get a couple of the Warped Tour compilation discs. That said, you will get pretty much just US punk... but the sound did originate here in the States. In Cleveland actually. The Warped discs are a good overview of current punk. You may also try Bad Religion's "30 Years Live" for free by downloading it at:

The suggestions of others are all great, especially the Ramones, Clash, Pistols, Iggy, etc...
