NEIL YOUNG & THE BLUE NOTES "this note's for you" 1988...#61 US, #56 UK, #34 AU
Neil Young's first release back at Reprise/Warner was a jazz/big band/blues album...not another stupid 'genre' album i hear you thinking to yourselves?,Yes, another 'genre' album, No, not a stupid one by any means, this one is actually quite good and Young's vocals fit the style very well and all the songs are self penned. the best track here, "this note's for you" takes a swipe at all the artists who sell their souls to advertising products,namely Pepsi and Coke amongst others, its probably the least blues/jazz on the album with Neil turning up his electric guitar to "11" on the dial, elsewhere, the songs are more traditional in sound, with sax,horns, double bass,piano etc
theres not much wrong with this album it is a good solid collection of songs, almost certainly his best since 1979s "rust never sleeps" IMO.
i dont claim to be a blues/jazz purist in any sense of the word but it sounds pretty authentic to me., sorry about the lack of links again!

CSNY "american dream" 1988...#17 US
CS&N had repeatedly asked young to record an album with them for the best part of the last decade, but Young resisted, telling them he would only do so if David Crosby kicked his illicit drug habits as Stephen Stills had done. in 1988 they came back to him and he honoured his pledge to do so. i guess they were pretty glad it came to fruition as wht we end up with is thirteen good tracks and only one dud, Neil got four of the tracks on this one #'s 1,3,5 and 10. two of them rate very good here, the other two that are excellent are Crosby's "nighttime for the generals" and Stills "that girl"...a terrific blues song, a US tour followed the release of this album to critical acclaim and four singles made the US charts.
its obviously not as good as "deja vu" but it does have some nice harmonies and melodies.

I really like this one. If I'm right, this was the first NY album I bought.
There's a Double Bass/Bass Guitar note on Coupe de Ville that has to be the deepest sound I've ever heard from an album...

I'm not kidding !!!!! I am very tolerable to most music. I figure if they can play an instrument half decent, attempt to sing and write songs then they're to be admired and held in high esteem !!!
* (I'm curremtly listening to the PHISH Halloween series - they're doing the entire Beatles' White lp - I like it)
So I have no discretion with music and no developed critical ear. Nothin' like it when the gang and I get together at a house party and let 'er loose !
