I love to listen to avant garde jazz and free music from all genres ! I find it fun to listen to because you don't know what's coming next !
Eric Dolphy, Coltrane, Cecil Taylor, early Jan Garbarek, Sun Ra, and of course Anthony Braxton....some to listen to !
Who are some of your favorites, Rusty ?

I love the total abstraction and use of dischords . this music comes from the soul.

Well i like a lot of jazz but ornette coleman don cherry jackie mcclean miles davis and a lot of the blue note artists spring to mind. The thing about music is that you can have all sorts of different styles coming together and experimenting to make new music. For example Miles davis experimented with all styles from bebop /hard bop avant garde and even jazz rock. Also Eddie harris has played in many styles from blue note east coast jazz to abstract avant garde and even funk. this is well represented on the album (Excursions ) by eddie harris . Shelly Manne recorded an album (mannekind) which was very much a jazz rock outing.
Therefore I think music is a huge thing and I think all styles work together in jazz and and rock.

I've recently been getting into some jazz and jazz-fusion and what not. "A Love Supreme" was the first jazz album I had listened to all the way through. Thing is an absolute piece of beauty. I'll definitely be checking some of his other stuff out. Right now though, I'm in that mode where I loved ALS so much, I'm too afraid to listen to any other work of his in fear of dampening my opinion of him. <_<

I recommend Coltrane's 4 disc Live in Japan ....you won't dampen your love of him with this ....unbelievable beauty and improvisational chops !

that live set is pretty great (namely the 50 some minutes long "My Favorite Things"), but I'd more recommend it to a die hard fan and not a beginner. If you're looking to get more into the Trane, the best places to go after ALS would be "Giant Steps", "Ole Coltrane", and his self-titled album from 1960, and if you want something more adventorous, "Ascension" (my favorite of his work) or "Interstellar Space"
