My favorite bands have changed over time... so I guess I'll just talk about the first one.
I was doing sound for my high school play which spanned over several decades. So we had to pick songs that represented certain eras to be played at certain times. When we got to the 80's-90's we played U2's "With or Without You" That's when I found my first favorite band. I loved the guitar sound and how the whole thing kind of hypnotized me. I was really into U2 for years, but since "Elevation" I haven't liked them. But I think I have just about everything they released up through "All that You can't Leave Behind." Never went to a concert because I don't like crowds. (Maybe one of the reasons I like new bands - I can see them live, up close and personal.) When I was going through a break-up a few years ago I watched one of their live DVD's with a couple of girlfriends while we binged on icecream and cookies. That was pretty much the closest I ever got to seeing Bono or the Edge up close and personal. But it made the whole heartbreak thing easier. So despite the fact that I'm no longer a U2 fan, I'm thankful for all that they gave me and still listen to their older albums.

^ Good story.
You're right that tastes change, but I find myself returning increasingly frequently to music that I thought I'd left behind. Music & memories seem to go hand in hand...

It was because of my stepdad. He had a lot of goooood music (mostly classic rock) and I found an interesting CD with a letter R and a + next to it. And that was the time I heard Rammstein
It was about ten years ago and I still love them, even after last 3 records which I found not...brilliant

My favorite band is Flogging Molly which I learned about through another music forum I belong to. Another one of my favorite bands is Creedence Clearwater Revival which I started listening to because of Married... With Children when Al Bundy was singing Who'll Stop the Rain in the backyard.

My favorite band changes quite a bit but my current favorite is Hollywood Undead I found out about them through a Madden 09 soundtrack it was heavily censored and I hated it. Out of curiosity I looked up the uncensored version on youtube and I liked it. A month or so later my friend told me I had to check out the song Paradise Lost because he listens to it before his hockey games. I loved it listened to every other song by them and been a huge fan ever since
I had just arrived in Canada in the winter of1964 - I was 12 years old - and went to a local restaurant with a new friend. My friend asked me if I'd ever heard of a new group called "The Beatles". When I said I hadn't he put a NICKEL (yes you read correctly) into one of those little jukeboxes that used to be against the wall at each table and I heard "She Loves You" for the very first time. I still get goose bumps thinking about it.
Interestingly, the local radio station had a kind of "Battle of the Bands" thing going on between The Beatles and The Dave Clark Five, who were also very popular at that time. It was actually very close voting for quite a while.

I found my favorite band back in 1998 when I was only 7, I dropped my older brothers brand new Blink-182 cd and scratched it! I got yelled at, but the cd turned out to be one of my favorites!
