:focus: The original reason why I posted this was that using such a system I am finding myself with access to a whole new range of interesting material :

The last set of Genesis remasters contained 5.1 mixes of the albums which reveal quite a few interesting twists and turns

So do Mike Oldfield's remasters.

There are some excellent music DVD s/Blu Rays with a new insight into concerts and live work.
Most interestingly of all I have been looking at the quadraphonic projects of the 70s where special mixes were prepared of major albums..........

Now it seems that Dolby Digital II and several other decoders are capable of retrieving spacial information from some of the old quadraphonic material ( SQ...QS and CD4)

It is also documented on the internet that quite a few CD transfers were made from quadraphonic master tapes and hat the 4 channel information survives the transfer! ( it is mainly the ones that used phase technology !)

These can be reproduced to varying degrees of success by DD II .........................It even works if you transfer a vinyl copy to CD such as Mike Oldfield's Boxed which are SQ encoded.

THus I find that I am able to get some great insights into some of the material in colection.
So you can get a 5.1 version by playing the CD copied from the record back with DD II..................Cool
Nice to be able to go back to trust and friendship!!!!!!!!!

It's a mixed up sensation this being alive
Oh! it wears a man down into the ground
It's the strangest elation
I can't describe it
Oh it leaves a man weary
It makes a man frown.

i tend to think 9.1 7.1 5.1 2.1 and all that is another kinda TV selling con. Every year, flat screen, Plasma, LCD, 3D blah blah blah. In the 60's and 70's quadrophonic sound was what bearded hippie types invented and marvelled at how you could point to a sound spinning around the room, WOW man.

Now we have FX that can do the same thing with just stero speakers, and a bass extention, but this is all about mastering geekery.

At least audio is left alone in stereo. I mean we only have 2 ears, so why not. If they ever change it there will be a revolution and mass crowds on the streets burning 5.1 albums (just the ones you don't like of course).

Macintosh did a funny thing with the iPod by not putting a truly standard stereo jack in the iPod. They should be shot, strung up and neutered. The same company sells a computer for a good wack and charges 1/5 of the price of a computer for a bloody cable. I think they are going to the European court for a Belgian botty slap and rightly too.

But then again, there's nothing like a good fat Subwoofer to freak out your neighbours or make your pet dog fart.
