How do you do?

yikes hello everybody! wow it would seem i am not alone out here, what a warm welcome thank you!

if you here something live it has an entirely different sound to the recording. plus you have the ability to see where the music is coming from. most of the time live music is a commune amongst like minded people and you have the experience of place to add to it too. if there was no recorded music perhaps more people would play music and perhaps more people would experience it live. perhaps music would cease to have anything to do with money at all it it would become as much a part of life as breathing.

we already have thousands of years worth of recorded music at our disposal. do we need to record anymore? i think that there would be more quality music if money and celebrity where no longer an issue.

I don't think people should stop making music simply because there's a whole pile of it available. I do however agree with getting rid of the 'celebrity' aspect. It would neutralise all that rubbish being released where the music takes a back seat to the latest hairdo/clothes etc. But your post got me thinking. A lot of my favourite albums of well-known groups are from their live performances recorded, for example my favourite Kansas album is 'Two for the Show', my favourite Genesis album is 'Seconds Out', my favourite Tull album is 'Bursting Out'. All live performances recorded. And as for a 'place' being associated with a performance, I always associate a pre-recorded album with the place I was when I first heard it. As an example 'Tubular Bells' I first heard when I was in SWA - now Namibia - in the desert with a group of friends. Whenever I hear it I think back on those times - hell the back cover of the sea/beach/fire etc. even looks like the beach at Oranjemund. So I don't think only live music provides that. I think people associate sounds/music with a place regardless of whether it was was pre-recorded or performed live.

i wasn't suggesting that people stop making music, god forbid! that would be a thing to terrible to imagine. i just think that todays world is a passive place. people are bombarded by consumerism and people forget to participate actively with their relationship to music and remember why it's important to them.

for me recorded music helps me to crystalise a feeling or an idea. it can give me courage, solace or inspiration.

musicians themselves cannot rely on an income from recorded music now anyway, live music is where the record companies want to steal from their artists. for new acts its really to get people to go their gigs and pay for owt.

so what new recorded music should i be listening to that will nourish my soul?

Gotta love Mr Music Head's post. Another classic.

What sort of music do you like B? Maybe one of the forum members can point you in a new direction. Who knows!!

like most people i like a very broad spectrum of music. i used to cherry pick from the internet but now i like to go to the charity shop down the road and pick up some vinyl for a quid. the other day i picked up Chopin Nocturnes Vol 2, Johnny Cash's Greatest Hits Vol 1 and Kate Bush's The Whole Story. With regards to new music I like Claire Nicolson, Santigold, 'Allo Darlin and The Treetop Flyers to name but a few.

Just rediscovered something I used to listen to about 15 years ago. Ismael Lo - Jammu Afrika - marvellous stuff. I had forgotten all about him.
