CRAZY-HORSE Wrote:right, on to tiggi's review of pink floyd.....when you say people are 'wrong' for assuming 'wish you were here' is their best/strongest album, ibelieve it comes down to personal taste, as i wrote, i believe 'division bell' is their finest 66minutes on disc, a lot of people would disagree, mainly from its sales, but that album fits right for me, however if someone asked me to reccomend a starting point to pink floyds works i would suggest 'dark side of the moon', 'wish you were here' or 'the wall', purely from the point of view that they are easy accessable albums with a bit on them for everyone, i certainly wouldnt encourage them to purchase 'the final cut' (another of my floyd favourites) or 'division bell'.
this is not a personal attack on you tiggi, just a reminder to maybe not put your opinions into reviews/overviews i still love you though!
I appreciate what you're saying Mr Crazy. Actually, the "wrong" statement was made with a bit of a twinkle in my eye.
Regarding objectivity, I spoke to Mrs Tiggi whilst preparing this Beginner's Guide & mentioned that I was finding it really hard to remain objective. I feel a bit of subjectivity is inevitable when making recommendations or reviewing anything.
It's funny, but the post-Waters studio albums (A Momentary Lapse of Reason, & Division Bell), whilst still being pretty good, just don't do it for me. I'm too attached to RW's lyrics to find them satisfactory, and Gilmour's a poor lyricist in my book. As I'm always saying, it's only right and proper that we don't all agree regarding what's good & what's not !!
I love you all too, in a non-gay way...

CRAZY-HORSE Wrote:seriously! i think we should get back to the thread,
what is the issue between waters and gilmore from a factual point of view, because i have two friends(i do, truly...and theyre not gay) one thinks waters is right and the other thinks gilmore is right in their dispute over pink floyd, so what exactly is the dispute between the pair of them?
During the recording of The Final Cut, in which Rick Wright played no part, Waters' apparent need to control everything was causing immense strain. Gilmour, and to a lesser extent Nick Mason were unhappy with the sacking of Rick Wright, since he was a bit of a fragile personality, and seems to have had a real collapse of confidence in the aftermath.
Gilmour referred to The Final Cut as Pink Floyd's worst album & Roger Waters' best !!
Not long after the album's release, things became so bad that Waters left the band to pursue a solo career since he believed that he was the only one of the remaining three that was making any creative effort. However, after a few years, Gilmour, Wright, & Mason decided to record & tour again, at which point Waters filed a lawsuit to prevent them, as he viewed himself as the soul of the band. The courts disagreed, and the three-man Floyd continued very successfully.
Waters became very bitter that his solo work sold poorly by comparison with Pink Floyd lite, and that when they were both touring simultaneously, the Floyd were selling out stadium gigs whilst performing what he regarded as his songs, at the same time that he was struggling to sell out arena gigs.
Many frosty years followed, but the Live-8 gig started a bit of a thaw, and Waters & Gilmour recently played together at a charity gig at Gilmour's request. Gilmour has since agreed to play at a couple of Waters' The Wall gigs which start soon in the US.
I think Waters would now freely admit that he behaved like an arsehole at the time, and was a bit of a megalomaniac, but I still believe that the band wouldn't have been half the band they became without him...

thanx tiggi, although im not a huge Floyd fan i have seen a couple of Roger Waters 'live' dvds and was impressed with them. every successful band needs a meglomaniac, it becomes a problem when there are two or more in the group.....Floyd, beatles eith paul and john(after epstiens death),buffalo springfield with stephen stills/neil young to name 2 others, guess thats why they become solo artists for 'complete control',whereas, on the other hand, mick and keith understand and respect eathothers position in the stones, that i admire.

Can't agree. It sounds nice enough, but lacks the biting lyrics of their best work.
Definitely a fine album, but nowhere near their peak.
