Non-music lovers

There was a guy I met.. a close friend actually.
Later, I learned it was just a put on, he wanted to appear as a hardcore serious guy..

Then for a while he was convincing us he only listens to mozart... Then he would identify songs playing on radio claiming he knows about it coz his sister hears it a lot.. & that he keeps track of his sisters stuff...

Weirdo!!!.

I think they all lie... unless they are deaf or haven't been introduced to the right kind of music meant for them.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that it's a brain thing i.e. most brains are designed to find music attractive. My neice is 20 months old and she often boogies on down to music, which means it must be hardwired into her.

My recollection is that, for those who don't like music, the wiring is slightly different.

That would be awful...

I've often thought that I'd like to review music professionally, and apart from the fact that I don't think I'd be any good, the thought of losing my love of music because it becomes a job scares me senseless.

My stepfather doesn't like music. Well, he doesn't like most music. He fixates on one song at a time, and that's all he listens to for a few years. [shudders] Nickelback..... ugh.

It would be interesting to see how someone who is born totally deaf reacts to music the first time they are able to hear it - say after some corrective surgery or something like that. Wonder if there are any such cases?? Would make an interesting conversation.

I did give some thoughts about these two outcomes and I concluded same thing as you both: it would destroy my love of music.

Because working in a studio, you hear so much music by thinking only "sound" that you just become like these two guys! Horrible.

Same with reviewing music, how the hell can you keep up with good review by listening constantly to new albums? Worse, you listen to them with your critical side, not your enjoying side, and this become your daily habit even with your own music. Some albums need retrospection to appreciate them, you can't always say on a first listen if it is real good or not.

Thinking about it, maybe working in what you love may spoil it. I always enjoyed video games; maybe working in it would destroy my basic vision of them, never enjoying them the same again.

As both are used as entertainment, maybe always doing it is not good, because when you come home after the day you just can't stand them anymore. Horrible again.

I think that with art and movie reviewers, as well. I think professionals get a warped pallet or something and seem to strive for ever weirder forms. I love that in Spinal Tap commentary part of the DVD, where they are discussing the 'black' album and trying to sound all knowledgeable.
