90s Comeback!
#11
My advice is this. Strip it down to bare bones rock. No synths (and I am a great fan of synth/electonica), no gimmicks, no frills and for God's sake no flash guitarists unless what they are playing actually makes sense and complements the music. A simple four piece - guitar, bass, drums, vocals. Throw in some solid lyrics (with some real meaning behind them) instead of trying to be hip by saying the latest catchphrase currently doing the rounds on FaceBook and you are off to a good start. OK I am an old fart, but a band I always go back to, and they were no great shakes musically but managed to produce some of the best basic material i've ever heard, is Bad Company. Sure they had their bad albums as well. But listen to this - a very basic four-piece playing real rock.

Two modern bands which I think are heading in the right direction for true rock revival are The Blackwater Fever and Rival Sons. Perhaps you could see what elements of their music you might be able to incorporate into your own Smile Two songs I'd recommend from each would be:

The Blackwater Fever - Blackwater,
The Blackwater Fever - Hot Resin,
Rival Sons - Get Whats Coming,
Rival Sons - Torture.
Listen to the wind blow,
Watch the sun rise,
Runnin' in the shadows.
Damn your love, Damn your lies,

I agree with the original post mostly. I think you're thinking of early 90's alone. Towards the end I was not happy with the music being churned out. I've turned to Mumford and Sons and the Avett Brothers and Laura Marling which are all great but they're all the talent I have left. I'm missing rock that will move me. I don't really listen to new rock it all sounds so manufactured to me. It's like they're using a formula approved by their producers, designed to sell to the masses. Aren't people getting sick of it?
