As for his best representation, that's will be subjective. Hendrix roots are in blues, his commercial work was covered pretty well in this post. Are You Experienced and Electric Lady Land were released in 67 and 68 respectively, followed by a Smash Hits LP. Between the three you will get a feel of everything that was commercially successful. In 94 a blues LP was release simply entitled Blues. That will give you a great representation of his early works.
