BTW I use the site as a launching pad for all the crap I write. So far I have gotten away with it. Just look at my profile and find my website. 3 projects up there at the moment - two are 'old style' electronica and the third is a mixed bag of prog rock/new age/world music. 'Real' instruments on that one.

Rube, I listened to a couple of albums off your list. You didn't ask but I said I'd get back to you about it. (I'm kinda into albums...)
Harvest.
I listened to it many many moons ago. To me it kinda feels like a sort of "campfire" album because the production is so... cozy and intimate. You put on headphones and close your eyes and it's easy to imagine him sitting right there with his acoustic guitar and an analog drum kit right there and a fire going. Very nice! At the same time though, from song to song, the production changes a bit - by the third song it sounds like they hung a microphone over the door. And of course the lush orchestration change that vibe but you get the idea. Production-wise it sounds like they recorded the album by installments instead of doing all the drums - boom: done. All the guitars - done, all the bass tracks - no, it sounds like from song to song they just kinda installed themselves for a short session and did it again the next day and the next or whatever. The songs well, what can I say, it's a classic album. I can't even be bothered to look up how many zillion copies it sold over the years. Some songs are radio staples. Discovered this morning I can do a borderline obnoxious dead-on imitation of his voice that had my co-workers in stitches - but hey, respect: he's a fellow Canadian! Sure as hell did better for himself than I ever did with MY crappy songs! But for me, the bottom line is you can't spit in the wind and eight bazillion record buyers can't be wrong - but I can only take this in small installments. I'm a Neanderthal with my knuckles dragging on the floor; me like the Stooges, me thinks Motorhead frickin' RAWKS! So this is a bit middle-of-the-road for my tastes. Ain't gonna get my ya-yas out this way. Yes, it's a great album. But truth be told, "There's a World" took some doing for me and by the time "Words" was pummeling me at the end? I was ready for the check.

Jesus - that's a different animal for me Rubes. The only song I'd ever heard from these guys before was the obligatory Do It Again - and I LIKE that song, man! It's groovy you know? So when I sat down to this record my first thought was Who the hell is THIS?? Production is slick tight and clean, layers of instruments all in their well-thought out little niches and can I tell ya: MAN these guys can play! There's a song - I forget, I should have written it down - the drummer's going to town all over the place! I kinda wanted to crap my own pants! The guitarist? All those guys in fact! The bass player. I'm just not used though to a band NOT guitar-led. Keys keys keys, which I have exactly ZERO problem with, but you can tell these songs were written by nobody's fool. All these jazz overtones, augmented chords, diminished, suspended chords - a HORN section! Whooooah! What I think? Not easily accessible to every Tom Dick and Harry like myself. This was a "put your thinking cap on and pay close attention" listening session, but maybe that's just the musician in me. A thinking man's album. The music just takes its place, front and center. No cutesy Intro-Verse-Chorus-Verse-Chorus-Solo-Chorus formula here - he's letting it all hang out. Kinda of a rainy-day album for me, in a good way. Not a joyful day-at-the-beach album, not for me anyway. "I Got the News" was a bit painful to sit through. "Peg" is brandished as a chorus and yeah, he makes it work - at first I thought he was banging a round peg through a square hole, but no, it works - but it's like most of the album. No Honey Honey Sugar Sugar here, this guy's a musician's musician and I'm not worthy. This album definitely deserves more listens so that it can grow on me.

Yes I made time for this too. (Pretty full day!) Now don't nobody burn me at the stake, I tried, man - I really did. But I knew damn well going into this that this was not my typical fare, and that's exactly why not once have I sat down to listen to this in 52 years until today. (Way to go, Ruby! That's power!) Turns out I knew about four or five songs ("Hey I know that one!") Kudos for the open letter lyrics and letting-it-all-hang-out matters of the heart, the crafty songwriting, the you make me feel like a natural woman and I feel the earth move under my feet (damn! Wish I'd have come up with that! That's good!) I listen to jazz, classical, crooners, I listen to non-rock stuff, I swear it! But THIS... I can't, man. I tried really hard. But three quarters into it I had to get out of the dentist chair and kill it. Sorry. I'm in touch with my feminine side but I'm more Donnas and Kitty, far, FAR less Carol King. I'm gonna go hang my head in shame now.
Ok fuck it I won't. But I tell ya: I had a blast discovering this new stuff! At the end I started listening to your Eric Clapton one but thirty seconds into it, seeing this was not going to be the Clapton I think I know, that this was going to be another thinking cap session, I postponed it.
I'm thinking of just doing a "suggest one album" a day - less investing, you know? But fun nonetheless.

Had a listen to these - first track did nothing for me.
Second one was far more interesting. Quite like the flow of it. The wah-wah guitar reminded me of Led Zeppelin/Clapton.

Thanks for the feedback! You guys get the idea. I got a lot of stuff like that, the most recent is silly ha-ha funny, not as well produced as those songs. This other batch was made in my basement on a dinky little eight track recorder whereas the two songs I shared on here were done on a 16 track recorder and produced by the guitarist who knew his ass from a hole in the ground, unlike me.
Besides, I gotta listen to some more of Ruby's albums. I'm scared to ask Music Head for suggestions... 3500 albums?! That's a lot of albums!

Holy shit - this stuff is great! Where'd you find these guys? It's spacey and futuristic yet driving and memorable without going fluffy. I love this! Bravo! (Crankin' at the office... they stopped wondering why I keep my door closed...) Thank you! I'm only two songs into this and loving it!
Stick around Rockenheimer - Ruby will surprise you with what she comes up with! With regard top my own stuff you might like 'Into Imagined Lands' or parts of it anyway. Very diverse project. Have a feeling the other two will not be your cup of tea. All synthesizers and drum machines. IIL is actually excerpts from three separate projects that never seem to get finished because I just don't have the time to invest. Too much other stuff going on. Wish I could take a year or two off and just work on them.
