You should do both! A good instructor will support you when you are feeling discouraged and teach you good habits. And online videos are a great way to absorb new ideas.

im pretty positive that one on one/face to face contact would work better

In a word - NO. They can help to a certain degree. The bottom line - as with everything in life - if you want to achieve something it's up to you to make the effort. And there are enough online tutorials to get you going, so there's no excuse. BUT! if you want to MASTER an instrument, then you do need a tutor - online or not.

I'm sure it does. It's just up to you to push your self to learn. Alot of people are too lazy. I'm one of them. LOL!

For a beginner, online lessons may not work out. Once you can play, they are a fabulous source of tricks and what-not.
When starting, you need someone there to watch your physical posture, hand position etc. - who can correct you before a bad habit evolves, which can take as long to get rid of as it did to acquire. Pay a good teacher, at a reputable store or school, not some friend or guitar player who thinks he's a teacher, and everything will be much easier later on.

Weather it will work or not, depends on a person that learns. The main problem is that if watching the lesson on the computer you can always pause it and let something distract you. In case with the teacher it is less likely =)
Personally, I think it is better if you have a teacher/instructor in front of you for your music lesson but not necessarily you should enroll in a music school. It may be costly but if you would really love to learn, you could enroll for music lessons. But if you are short of budget, self-study will really be handy.

BTW... online music lessons have virtually killed off a lot of private instruction.
For ex: In the 80s I couldn't even keep up w/students. Now, it's last on the budget list, and it makes it impossible to get enough students to make a go of it. |
