Spirit [SIZE=2]Anytime a group has an album that stands with The Who's Tommy or Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon as best examples of art rock (much as I hate that term), you know you are on to something. Mere words fail me but that they weren't huge has to do with mistakes, fate and bad advice (to not play Woodstock, i.e) and had nothing whatsoever to do with the music.[/SIZE] Now the music:

A big shout-out to ZeusMoose for bringing Bill Nelson into the convo. Exactly what I was looking for in this Thread. Mr. Nelson is as close to an artistic Renaissance man as there is in music and accomplished in the other arts as well (wouldn't surprise me a bit to hear he'd done choreography, etc.). Important enough yet obscure enough to bring this to you: http://www.allmusic.com/artist/bill-nels.../biography Complex to the point that hardly anybody can like or even admire all of his output, but everybody can find something to love about parts of it. Hell of a guy.

Yes, Bill is one very talented person , without question. One funny thing about that bio piece is that it's from last century :biggrin: , so he's put out about 30 cds since it was written. As you note, it's not likely any normal person will like all he does , and that's certainly true of me. I cull about 20-25% of his tunes into the most awesome mixes though . He gets a ton of respect from me for following his muse and not 'selling out' . He could have taken the easy road, and kept Be Bop Deluxe, and gone down the familiar path of artists/bands who do their thing , but never really evolve into anything more than what they became known for. Bill has done the opposite ; he ditched the sure thing and has kept right on evolving in hundred different ways , always looking for what's around the next corner . All in a small, one room studio upstairs at home .
I'm really eagerly awaiting the next one, a collaboration with Reeves Gabrels (Tim Machine/Bowie) called 'Fantastic Guitars' , out in the next few weeks, most likely . There are plenty of recent ones here
