Wow
As in JustinJJustin's case, Dream Theater was the first prog-rock/metal band I ever listened to. I still listen to them and enjoy their music sometimes. Except for certain songs (Wither or The Shattered Fortress, for instance), for me, they've had great albums from Images and Words to Black Clouds and Silver Linings, with my favourites maybe being IAW, Awake and SFAM (admitting, however, that I don't like Systematic Chaos as a whole. A half of the album only.) I love all those albums since DT made the best of their musical and technical skills for making complex yet real and powerful music, which is for me a bit of what progressive rock/metal is about.
From A Dramatic Turn of Events on, I felt they've lost their way a bit (and I don't think it's only about Portnoy's departure lol) Don't get me wrong: they still can make good songs (some tunes from the self-titled showed me so, for instance) but they really have to take a long rest from touring and other stuff and focus on composing and only composing, without rushing, for getting the best of them again. In a certain way, Portnoy was right in asking for a rest (in others he didn't: he also wanted that time for dedicating it to his zillion other projects, for example). Opinions aside, I really like them and I've listened many of their albums hundreds of times, and although I can recognise some of their weaknesses (some of them mentioned by Big Ears, ââ¬â¹adding their excessive technicality and some 'half-baked' compositions in newer albums ), I think they are certainly worth listening. At least, in their older albums, they are.
