Dr. John covers Satchmo Armstrong
#1
"Covers" is such a weak-Willie term to use on this--imaginative charts, solid players, killer soloists (Terence Blanchard, Bonnie Raitt, a host of others), diistinctive lead vocals * doing the music of a jazz giant original: http://www.npr.org/2007/08/15/12624640/l...-trumpeter << Mr. Armstrong was a beastly good player but on a higher plane, helped shape modern jazz. AMG was as near-rapturous as they get: http://www.allmusic.com/album/ske-dat-de...0002687077
Some tunes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b8mcDMXAcqw
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y6G8Xzy6yWg << 2 tunes w/interview segments w/ Terence Blanchard, one bad cat indeed << looks to be a local horn-line...that sax player far right got my attention...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qGo_Nr4DAfU << with Arturo Sandoval, a brilliant Latin AND bop jazz man
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A5eBfFEn8Ng << with Bonnie Raitt
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fSLHNwU4BX8 << with Nicholas Payton...and what a beastly good player he is
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7PCxc6-ilBY << I've had that feeling....
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sMjBITuqfSo << A consummation devoutly to be wished. Many of you have this and are blessed indeed.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F9uvtP309kw << Sam Cooke just killed on a straight R&B/gospel version
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cVGSBYjGZAU << w/ Mr. Blanchard << this advice only works for a little while--they'll have to be confronted sooner or later...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GvzGiL7OIDI <<Features James "12" Andrews Pure New Orleans, straight from King Oliver's Creole Jazz Band
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b_dxwb8xkBY << features Shemekia Copeland So tell me why women like losers/ bad boys? This guy is baffled.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a73t9FDOk_c << Sr. Sandoval again
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OW3LBc4oAWw <<nice Latin beat with the Dirty Dozen Brass Band

BONUS 1: A very much younger Dr. John playing with a top-notch New Orleans orchestra: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NM1xqDlUM_g
BONUS 2: a 1930 version of "When You're Smiling....": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3440NdrjziA << as a hot as a 2-dollar pistol

* The better term is "idiosyncratic", that characteristic shared with such as Tom Waits and Joe Cocker--instantly recognizable but may take time to get used to.
A man accustomed to hear only the echo of his own sentiments, soon bars all the common avenues of delight, and has no part in the general gratification of mankind--Dr. Johnson
What he said. Amen, Bro--JazzboCR
