Spirit Anytime a group has an album that stands with The Who's Tommy or Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon as best examples of art rock (much as I hate that term), you know you are on to something. Mere words fail me but that they weren't huge has to do with mistakes, fate and bad advice (to not play Woodstock, i.e) and had nothing whatsoever to do with the music. Now the music:
12 Dreams...remastered + bonus tracks: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TXXdZjispHs << this could be one of the best hours you ever spend. Brilliant in every way. Seamless and coherent but every song is distinct. Revelatory. If you can't find something here to grip you, I'm not sure I want to know you--it really is like that. I'm even mad for the album cover.
Spirit Their first (see especially song 1 and song 4): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MLkekPi9qsY << Jimmy Page was listening...and lifting.
The Family That Plays Together They crack it right out of the hole on this one but at least 3 other killer tunes as well: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-p37y39LxFI
I urge you to at least skim their wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spirit_(band)
Crack the Sky A band from Smallburg, WV making Rolling Stone's Debut Album of the Year with no killer players and no major company push? That's CtS. Distribution problems and being a "high concept" band (that is, not a lot of radio-friendly material) kept them back.
A live perf of a song from their '12 release Ostrich--they've transmuted but still a kick-ass band: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iNfYVamp4QY Another? Sure: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9zcjfESWjOo << uke fans: rejoice!
Some cuts from White Music: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F1zfimY2V...F10979C445 << another piece that got liberally stolen from
