Nothing to do with Christmas so the title doesn't fit. Story about a NYC middle class family whose lives are torn apart by the murder of the teenage son by a street thug. Focus on the father, Mr. Ives who remains in a state of depression for years after the event. Mainly about his life and how he deals with it. Covers about 40 years with the familys priest always pressuring Mr. Ives to forgive the man who reforms and becomes a model citizen. Mr. Ives is 75 years old before he breaks down and goes to visit the man and all is forgiven. The book is about dealing with a tragic event and forgiveness in general.
