I think indie rock could actually be considered a sub genre to alternative. However, while it did start out based on the independent labels they emerged from it has become it's own sound. However, while the usage of the term indie may be different in the UK and the US I think that there are many European bands that have mastered the indie rock sound. But I must concur to the suggestions listed before me. You pretty much can't go rock with the majority of those listings. However, I will warn against Death Cab as they have become very mainstream and changed their sound to that of the pop genre their older stuff is good, and with Weezer, you kind of have to pick and choose which songs of their you like because they're kind of all over the place lyrically (some very shallow, some pretty good) but over all with the sound of "indie" just listen to a wide range of bands and pick from their because it is a very good and original sound that has not received enough credit in recent years. And that's enough of my ranting for the day
