TOM PETTY & THE HEARTBREAKERS "into the great wide open" cd,1991.
i always thought of Petty as a 'bob dylan who could sing' LOL
after the success of the Travelling Willbury's and his "full moon fever" solo set, both produced by Jeff Lynne, Petty re-unites with his Heartbreakers for another Lynne produced set...
although i do like this album it seems as though its just too 'polished' in the production...like ELO's material.
and IMO Petty was always one of those 'rough and rugged' artists who seemed to appreciate the warts and all studio sound ie:record as is and let it be.
look, nothing bad on this album whatsoever, some great tracks also...only two tracks on here also that i would say were 'classic' Petty sounding songs..."out in the cold" and "makin' some noise", probably as Lynnes stamp is not all over these ones. also interssrting to note that there was a distinct George Harrison sound throughout this one.
some lovely 'americana' style story telling on here, which is something Petty has always excelled at(like Springsteen), pretty hard to knock a guy who was still writing good tunes into the third decade of his career...!
I LIKE THIS ALBUM
