Mary Beth Norton - Founding Mothers and Fathers - 1997



Misleading title as this has nothing to do with the founding fathers as we think of that term (Washington, Adams, Jefferson). The focus here is the mid 1600's. The colonies were being formed and rules had to be made. An in depth analysis of how laws were enforced in that period. Interesting to find all of the laws that were created based on biblical text. Scary too. Life in two different areas of the country (Massacusetts and Maryland) are compared, and while punishments varied, the laws were very similar. Public lashings for a lot of things. Just be thankful. Took me awhile to get into it, but I did. Seemed like a textbook at times. Probably only appreciated by scholars, and me.
