STEPHEN STILLS "stephen stills" cd,1970.
SteveO is going to like this after he posted it a while ago, then reccomended it to me.....
i guess in bands, you pick a favourite member and love them and tend to dismiss other members who diss the one you love, Floyd fans tend to be either Gilmour or Waters fans,Bealtes fans are generally Macca or Lennon fans...the same for me with Buffalo Springfield...always dismissed Stills but as you know...i love Neil Young, but things are changing now.
even though Stills and Young are complete control freaks with attitude i always thought Stills was an AH and wouldnt let myself entertain the idea that he was the equal of Young after Springfield split up in the late 1960s...
anyway,
this debut solo album was recorded around the same time as the classic CSNY "deja vu" set, it has bits of pop, blues, folky acoustic material and with help from friends Clapton,Hendrix,Crosby,
Nash,Mama Cass to name a few it couldnt really be anything but a classic album IMO. im still not keen on Stephen's vocal abilities at times but i got to admit his guitar playing is absolutely sublime on the rockier bluesy tracks here....looks like ive got to look a bit further into his solo career now as this is a cracker of an album overall.
i guess the problem i have with Stills is that he never evolved over time, he just seemed to play the same sounds on everything i have heard from Buffalo Springfield,Stills-Young Band and CSN, whereas Neil Young chopped and changed throughout his career(some downright aweful material but at least he was thinking and testing out different things!).
when i saw CSN the other week he did do "love the one you youre with" live within the set and it was brilliant, still dont quite like it as much as The Isley Brothers version i also own, but it is still worthy of "***" on here, shame there is one track i do not like, but the others more than make up for that little blemmish!
I LOVE THIS ALBUM
