Another set in the Time-Life Big Band series. Always amazed that music this old is obtainable. All of these 21 tracks are from 1938-1941, which was Artie Shaw's peak period. On researching these artists, I find it funny that popular music even then was so fleeting. You had to get it while you could, because tomorrow something else may come along. Sure, these guys were around for a long time, but their popularity never maintained it's original level. Artie was was born in the big apple in 1910 and died in 2004. He never intended to be a musician. A published author was his goal. He finaly achieved that after retiring from music in 1954. Learned to play the saxaphone at age 13, switched to clarinet at sixteen, then joined a band and left home. It was the mid 30's before Artie got his own group together and hit the big time shortly after with Begin The Beguine. Some of the names in his bands through the years, Ray Conniff, Buddy Rich, Billie Holiday, Helen Forrest, Mel Torme. Only three vocal tracks on this album, which doesn't keep me from loving it. I have a fascination with this era of music and I'm not sure why, but no I wasn't there.
