'11-22-63,' by Stephen King.
I have not read Mr. King since the nineties, but a member of another forum recommended this novel to me, and I went out and purchased it at Barnes and Noble. I am over halfway through it, and I must say, this is easily one of his top ten works.
As you can most likely tell by the title, it refers to the assassination date of John F. Kennedy.
The premise is about an English teacher, who through a dying friend, learns of a portal that takes one back in time to the exact date---August of 1958. When the individual goes back through the portal, he arrives two minutes ahead of the time he originally entered it. Each time he enters it, the changes he made regarding history are wiped clean.
This is a terrific and powerful novel. I read online where Stephen King stated he originally got the idea back in the seventies, but held off on writing it due to not being at the talent level he desired and the amount of research it would take to accomplish successfully.
If you are a fan of Stephen King or history, I highly recommend this novel. It just came out a few months ago. This is different than many of King's prior works, and is a refreshing change of pace. It is addicting and draws you in instantly and does not let go.
