Go back and check out the history of music ...there were pioneers of music long before Mars Volta(I like the band), etc... I think you are dwelling on the Beatles' as POP ...they are still POPULAR.....what you are saying is the same as saying that the Model T Ford sucks compared to a modern 2011 car....lol !!!!
Listen to some Beatle albums as well as the Sir Douglas Quintet around that era...they wrote very good songs....sit down. pick up a guitar and play and sing these songs! Remember when the Beatles arrived...1964 in Canada and the US...their music was spectacular for the TIME !!!! They also composed avant garde Revolution 9, heavy hard rock - Helter Skelter , Revolution, folk rock - I'm Looking Through You, We Can Work It Out. psychedelic - Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds, I am the Walrus ...man oh man !!!! Let's get serious here !!!!
Even Mars Volta, Nick Cave,etc... tunes have to be stripped down at first on piano or guitar in an unplugged version ..think about it !I think these songs sound a little "popish" also before they are embellished on a recording !!!

I find them somewhat mediocore, so I find their constsant praise to be annoying
The ultimate connection is between a performer and its' audience!
